bilirubin 50
Ha, ha, Well that is that sorted then, does the private pilot license come with the glasses? No need for lessons looking at that. Mike

Captain Coffee 2,030
In much the same way we accept with some disbelief that pilots used to navigate solely with a watch, charts, and compass... in 40 years pilots won't be able to imagine flying without these glasses or similar HUD systems. In 80 years people won't imagine being able to find their way to the grocery store without them. Cool stuff.
hifly 925
But will they work in FSX? Reminds me of those X Ray specs that were advertised in comics way back when. Never got suckered into buying them. @ Matt, in 80 years time we'll all be wearing them. You're walking down the street and this sort of info comes up; Dodgy hoodie 2 o-clock 30 yards. Slightly batty old crone 45 yards, will mutter something as you pass. ALERT! ALERT! Dog turd 47 yards. Grocery store 125 yards, friendly blonde working there today, favourite Pinot Noir out of stock. allardjd 1,853
I didn't see anything in the video that couldn't be individually done today with other, sometimes larger devices. I expect something very much like this will come along one of these days. Nothing there seemed to me to require any fundamental breakthrough in technology to achieve - just a matter of integration and application. Data sourcing, data currency, bandwidth, throughput; performance will all be tough to pull off - for instance, is that MOA hot, or can you safely fly through it? A new TRA has just been declared - how soon can the device show it? One of LAXs ILSs just went toes up - how soon does it disappear from the displays? KDAB just went IFR, etc, etc, etc.... Lots of information to juggle and display without overloading the pilot but nothing there that seems impossible in the relatively near term future. One saving grace is that most of the data needed by the pilot is fairly local, though data along the projected flight corridor will need to be integrated in also. I didn't notice any WX data depicted in the video - an obvious thing that needs to be depicted. John

Captain Coffee 2,030
... I didn't notice any WX data depicted in the video - an obvious thing that needs to be depicted. John I suspect certain (or most data) could be switch off-able so as to not clutter the view...similar to the CLR button on our GPS units. After establishing local, route and destination conditions...other than current local wind speed perhaps weather isn't something one needs to monitor constantly, and perhaps any significant changes to existing weather ahead could PopUp as a warning...gusts, micro bursts, sudden fog conditions ahead at destination...etc,etc. I doubt I would want to look at MOST of the data once up and into VFR mode...traffic certainly would be most helpful and left on constantly imo. Doubt I would even have airspeed and altitude displayed once up as a simple glance at instruments would still be plenty and less overall distracting from "flying".
allardjd 1,853
@ Captain Coffee - I agree but I would think the capability to display WX information would at least be briefly shown in what appears to be a demo video of what's possible. Traffic, WX, Terrain, Navaids, Airways, Airspace Boundaries, Airports, Flight Plan/Path, Flight Parameters - those seem to be the biggest pieces of what's needed for this to be a robust one-stop shopping solution. Own-plane monitoring and warnings with a pop-up capability would also be useful - engine health, pressurization, CO warning, vacuum system, fuel status, etc. None if this is magic - all pretty much currently doable as individual functions, though not really integrated to the level shown in the video by anyone just yet. It might be yet another case of the difference between the technically possible and the economically feasible. Anyone who goes to the trouble of doing this will need to have a reasonable expectation that they'll be able to turn a profit at the end of the day. John
