Flying into the highest international airport in the world

Recommended Posts

Flying an MD-80 in Avianca Livery from Santa Cruz to La Paz with an elevation of 13,300 ft

Flying into this requires an approach at 15,000 ft with an airspeed well above normal. Our flight takes us over the Andes and near lake Titicaca :D

At 15,000 ft and captured the ILS!  Yes, at 15,000 FT. Going to have to land at around 150 kts, which is 30 knots faster than typical for a normal elevation airport.  And will not be able to use flaps 40 at that speed.

Down and thrust reversers engaged.

Parked and ready to deplane. The weather is a bit nicer at this altitude.
