mutley 4,498
I haven't used PB for a while but one thing I did do a while ago was to download all my pictures onto a hard drive. I certainly won't be renewing my subscription..
needles 1,013
Like you Joe, I haven't used PB for quite a long time, possibly years but I'm happy to say there was nothing on there of importance to me so no love lost really. I do feel sorry for the guys that have got photos on there that do mean a lot to them. Very underhanded action indeed. Onwards and upwards.
dodgy-alan 1,587
The thing is they didn't even have the decency to give us a cut off date or send and email forewarning of the impending change, they just did it suddenly. It's completely screwed up thousands of pictures that I had on there. Not only for this forum but other stuff as well. My wife has here own account and rarely posts any pics from it but even hers have been stopped. Whilst I can understand the commercial reasoning, I think the way they went about it was totally outrageous and will I think destroy their prospects for good. Either way they have lost me as a customer.
needles 1,013
I agree Al', they have done this in a very underhanded fashion. As you say, they could have at least given people a timeline to work to whereby you could have retrieved all your pics before the closing down. It's a case of holding you to ransom which is not very fair in anyone's book.
allardjd 1,853
I wonder if I can use MS OneDrive for this? If you're a Win10 user you get a certain allotment of free OneDrive space on their cloud. John EDIT: https://1drv.ms/i/s!Am3hRJmvUbZRgx2VyjPtt7-2pDVg Hmmm - the OneDrive page gives an option for this and generates the link text, including an option to include HTML tags but I can't get it to display here. The link to the image above works but the link given in the "Copy URL to embed image" (different from the one above) doesn't. I think there must be a way to make this work but can't seem to find the combination. If we can work this out, anyone with a free OneDrive footprint could be their own image host. rosariomanzo 545
Sure you can John. Same goes for Google Drive and Dropbox. You only need some more work to create the link for the forums.
Captain Coffee 2,030
Yep, when I saw Alan's images killed here it was my first wind of this happening. B'stards. My apologies to all the threads here and elsewhere that had links to my old PB pics...but I can't be arsed to download all those images, nor restore all those links from my saved originals, nor would I want to burden FS Snaps will all that sudden bandwidth expense/burden even if I had the patience to do so... Sayonara Old Images. Long Live FS Snaps? (Will Board donations help to offset your expense in that regard Joe, or is the FS Snaps being hosted by a sponsor?)
allardjd 1,853
OK, here are is the text of the two links generated by them, one with the HTML tag option off, one with it on. If any of you web wizards can figure out why neither of them will display in a page here we may be on to something. I added the quote marks around them. According to the OneDrive page, this SHOULD work but I can't get it to... Captain Coffee 2,030
OMG that string of code just to describe the Image Title...I believe I have heard that 10 to the 24th power (google confirmed) is enough to describe all the stars in the universe...do we have that many images on line already? Google has indexed so far around 1 Trillion Image URLs according to a quick google search, and increasing rapidly due to all the digital cameras...I guess they are leaving plenty of headroom...or are they? brett 2,316
I believe you can still access your images they just aren't hosting the links elsewhere. never the less when I try to get in the site it looks like it was hacked, adds all over the places blocking content and even my library is all wacked out like it doesn't load correctly. It sucks that all my pics will no longer show in my posts but it was a free service so I can't get all huffed up about it but the company never sent me anything beforehand giving notice which was a nasty thing to do and wouldn't give me much confidence to use their paid service. I have heard they did this to their past paying customers too. It's either a hack or company suicide.
allardjd 1,853
I've looked at some of my posts and can generally see the images OK. Others can't??? That kind of sucks. I'm not going to close my account there because it's a source for me, but neither will I upgrade to a paid version. This kind of has the look and feel of ransomware - pay us or all your work is toast. My images are still OK in PB and I can recover them and copy them to OneDrive if anyone can figure out how to make those embed links in my post above work here. John

OzWookiee 151
^^ @allardjd , I just used the "Insert Other Media" in the editor and it seems to have worked ok. Will do a couple more tests
allardjd 1,853
I tried that but I think that ends up storing a copy of the image on the MH server, so not what we're looking for. I'm not 100% sure that's the case but it looked that way to me when I looked at the "Inspect Element" code. Mutley will understand that part better than I do. John

John Looking at the src tag on the page it is pointing to the url you provided, so no, it does not copy it to your server I'm just writing up a quick tute now for people not familiar with OneDrive
OzWookiee 151
OK Here's a quick tutorial for using OneDrive to share images If you don't already have OneDrive installed (preinstalled on Window 10), go to https://onedrive.live.com and sign in with your hotmail/outlook.com/microsoft account or sign up for a free account. Create the folders you want on your PC and save your images: Now OneDrive does provide a windows right-click menu option to share a link, unfortunately this does not work for our purpose and you will have to log onto OneDrive from your browser, navigate to your folder, click the image you want and then click the Embed link. From here you can click the nice big blue GENERATE button to get options for your link to embed the image. Coming back to the Hanger and your post you can click use the Insert other media option and choose Insert Image from URL: And paste the URL you copied from OneDrive into the input box and click Insert: And Voila! Your image is now showing in your post. The Insert other media option is just a quicker way of using the img button in the editor menu which achieves the same result. All of these images are hosted and linked from OneDrive

John FYI here is the source code from the image I embedded using the link your shared <p> <img alt="y4mI0TuClpxG9JirncCUwmF1ZxQj7iKUq5OJqq-2" class="ipsImage" src="https://dqghqw.bn1302.livefilestore.com/y4mI0TuClpxG9JirncCUwmF1ZxQj7iKUq5OJqq-2L-lei3P_hVb5NIb-iN66BHXvawSZgD3D_RtozaIx88Xh6mwBmSpL4XuCQQqPsPGahSEJuRpmRHSf49HghmXgLXBCMosbB4usOWDMgzNJqHo028VtlMUJh5GlIAsg0sFUkoXICEZFdh_L7Ezk3u006VzUNTZPfPlY5nvdJE0Ilkf7foLIA?width=511&height=660&cropmode=none"> </p> Looking at the src tag we can see that it is pointing to our OneDrive link All this said, unfortunately we should not upload anything of importance to any free site as they, really, are under zero obligation to keep those around forever. This does not excuse what PB has done but is a very unfortunate example of the web age we live in. Even though MS is giving us 5Gb of free storage, they could at their discretion decide to do the same thing as PB and require people to pay for hosting their files (unlikely but hey that's what people thought with PB). Personally I've been using smugmug.com for many years now as my online photo and image storage solution. They are very professional and (to me) reasonably priced photo focused site. I have all of our phones backed up to it and all of my board posts with nary an issue in 8 years (IIRC).
allardjd 1,853
Outstanding. Thanks. I already had a MS account and have been using it as a download site for my airport diagram bundles, for which it's working quite well. In my efforts earlier today I saw all those OneDrive screens and did pretty much what you showed. I did get the same result but thought the "alt" tag was indicating that it stored the image in a local location on the MH server. If not that's exactly what we're looking for. Nice work, and nice job of documenting how it's done. There's no reason others can't do this too if they're casting about for a new photo-stash for forum links. I agree entirely with your advice that these free storage sites are not bulletproof, or even necessarily secure and I don't put anything sensitive there. If anything is valuable to me, it's kept elsewhere too - at least one elsewhere. What PB did, MS, DropBox or any of the others could do any time they feel like it. To me, the way Photo*ucket went about this is not far removed from what the ransomware viruses do. At the moment my feelings are somewhere between betrayed and extorted. I suspect it's not illegal, but they've managed to upset a whole lot of people with one bone-headed corporate decision. They won't be getting any of my money - that's for sure. The hard part now is finding all the now-broken links. Speaking for myself alone, I'd be happy for anyone who sees a post from me with a missing image, either here or on other sites, to e-mail me with the URL and I'll put it on a to-do list and attempt to get it fixed. My e-mail is allardjd@earthlink John

allardjd 1,853
Another test.... Two feet of snow... EDIT: It looks like it works... @mutley - Please have a look and confirm that I'm not taking an image-sized bite out of your server space for this. I THINK it's just a link to this photo in my OneDrive folder. If so we have a solution, at least for Win 10 users. JDA EDIT EDIT: For info, I did NOT check the box on the OneDrive page to "Include HTML Tags". JDA
