mutley 4,497
Thanks to Ed for getting us to mainland Africa. That AN124 was truly impressive The baton was handed over for the next flight as part of our celebratory BBQ, beer and aviation tales! Now it's time to enter Mutley's magnificent time machine and to whisk you back to the late 1940's. WWII is not such a distant memory but let the good times roll, welcome to Leg 48 of the ATWC! Thanks, Sharon's mum Here in Lome-Tokin we have been witnessing a tremendous tropical storm, the worst of it is over, we are just waiting for it to blow itself out. We have a very special passenger for this flight amnd I am not talking about the baton! Ok, it's now or never, we get the signal to start. The Flight Engineer primes and starts the engines from his seat at the back. With a loud shotgun BANG of the cartridge start, the engine rotates into life with flames from the exhaust and a mass of smoke (Well depicted with the JF/AH model this is a beta model) All four running correctly now, you can store that fire extinguisher now! Final checks done and getting a push back.. A rear view from the pilots seat of the mass of equipment that would now fit inside an iPod! Holding for our instructions to line up. Engines at full throttle we are starting our run. This is brown pants territory! Not as bad as expected, time to stow the gear. Our VIP, Lady Pamela Allard is thinking of reading her latest copy of "Mon Ouvrage". We are heading for some turbulence, Sharon's mum is going to check that Lady Pamela is comfortable and maybe top up her glass of gin! Not a lot to see from the pit, but we know where we are going. Still climbing through the cloud but we can see blue ahead. Interesting, rain but no cloud. We are heading inland, the air is getting less moist. There is quite a way to go yet before we get back to the coast. At last! The Altlantic, from here we will turn North towards the Canaries. Lady Pamela takes note of our position and calls for a Pimms this time. Now over the Canaries after a long haul north over the waves. Ah, my clue of where to turn inland towards Madeira. Extending gear and turning onto what I suppose is base leg. We're #1 to land. Landing checks, there's a lot of people called "Roger" in here Uh-ho left towards the beacons. Following the beacons round in the middle of the famous curved approach. A couple of shots to follow from the islanders. It's not often you get a Connie in here, what a fabulous sound as she passes overhead. Nearly to the threshold, everybody stops now to watch. Meh! those tyres need changing anyway. We had to take the whole length of the runway to slow down, turning to head back to the terminal. The runway extension is very impressive. Parked up, Lady P is gathering herself ready to be collected by her chauffeur. All passengers disembarked, just the baton remains. Back in time as Sharon's mum signs off! Over to you Gareth and stop that dancing, you will soon get over it! Cheers!
