Vista / nVidia problems - Words of warning.

Recommended Posts

Hello peeps,

Ask me if I had a good holiday? The answer is I can't remember..

Sure we did loads of things but the one thing that stands out is spending what must be 4 days now trying to get my flight sim to work on Vista and nVidia.

This is the related Microsoft article to what I am experiencing...

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/di ... meout.mspx

Which basically explains amongst other things that if I had XP or a lesser OS than Vista then the machine would freeze and re-boot now it gives a message and sort of carries on going. Big deal, it still renders some programs unusable.

And it doesn't appear I am the only one.

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=25381 It's 64 pages long with many proclaimed fixes by users, none of which work

I think this problem is so bad that this website has appeared .

http://www.nvidiaclassaction.info/index.html

So don't be in a rush to upgrade. The only reason I did was that FS9 and FSX were both crashing under XP, and thinking about it could have been that way since I upgraded my PC last year.

I have tried swapping out the graphics card, installing both 32bit and 64bit Vista versions. The only thing I haven't tried is re-installing XP but that puts me back to square 1. Should I be knocking on ATI's door?

Just be warned, it may be worth while waiting a while. Just enter nvlddmkm (which is the problem driver) into Google and look how many hits :yikes:

So you will not be seeing too many screen shots from me in the short term. (Who said hurray!?)

Sympathy very much appreciated

Cheers

Ouch! That's not good. Given earlier problems with FS9 and XP, far less common than the Vista difficulties, could there be a mother board or CPU hardware issue?

I'm way out of my depth here, just trying to think outside the box.

I'm also having very serious second thoughts about upgrading just yet. My video card is ancient and memory is at the hardware limit with 500 Mb, but it doesn't crash or lock up or give error messages.

Thanks for your reply John,

It could be the MoBo, it could be the BIOS, the problems I have experienced have been so obscure and unattached I cannot form a link.

Truth be told I think I have covered all angles I can think of and looking on the web there are so many instances of exactly the same problem leads one to think that this a wider issue.

I know Martyn has been running Vista on his laptop, I am guessing he may have and ATI graphics card?

Ah the good old days of Windows 95

Ahhh that blows. Especially for us, as we wont get any shots.

I would offer help, but im not a hardware nut (hence, i beleve this is my first post in this forum section). So i can only hope that this one gets sorted.

Thanks for your kind words Fred, I am still working on it. I have gone back to XP Pro for the time being. I still have a problem which was the cause of me thinking instead of re-installing XP why not go for Vista

The problem is more deep seated me thinks, it needs a real pro to tell me what's wrong. It's why I haven't been around much recently.

Cheers

Yes John it is odd but FS9 runs fine on 1 Gb but FSX takes a while to load but appears to pootle along nicely. I expect I will have to get some more memory eventually
