Leg 10: Blantyre to Riyadh - Part 3 of 3

Recommended Posts

Well here we are. The end of what was (and is), to be a very weird and interesting leg of ATWC III.

Addis Ababa (HAAB) to King Kahled Intl (OERK)

Part 3 of Leg 10 sees us hosting a whole bunch of previously seen pilots... Alain, Nick, Al and Ross.

Fortunately, Al and Ross have dropped their poetic edge for this Leg in order to discipline the expectedly argumentative Alain and Nick.

The four pilots managed to somehow find an old Arkia 757 hanging around at HAAB. They hopped in for the flight to Riyadh, where it was due to visit for a servicing anyway. Of course, the baton was that special passenger aboard this flight.

After pushback, Alain taxiied the Aircraft along the taxiway to runway 07L at HAAB. Nick was the First Officer at this time. Him and Alain would Fly for the first section of the flight, before Ross and Al (who are sitting in the jumpseats in the cockpit) take over the rest of the journey.

Lined up and ready to go, Alain advanced the 757 to full throttle.

Rotate!

Climbing away from Addis Ababa, Nick and Alain are at the controls whilst Al and Ross oversee their actions.

Halfway through the initial climb, Al and Ross take over the controls. There's the baton!

Continuing in the climb...

Surprisingly, Nick and Alain haven't argued one single bit yet. Things are looking great for Part 3... Until Nick asks to go to the toilet.

ATWCe15.jpg

Nick returns to the cockpit wielding some sort of weapon. "Hand over the baton Alain" he said.

"Nick! What are you doing" said Ross.

"I need that baton. Hand it over and nobody gets hurt"

Unobligingly, Alain handed over the baton.

Nick then left the cockpit with the baton. Suddenly, a huge roar was heard from the cabin, as Nick parachuted out of the passenger door.

Jeez! We need to close that door ASAP! That rapid de-pressurization can't be good for the airframe. Alain, would you be so brave as to venture into the cabin and close it?

"I suppose so..."

ATWCe16.jpg

With the door closed, Alain returned to the cockpit.

"That's it" Al said. "ATWC III is ruined".

"Maybe not as much as you think..." Said Alain.

"What are you talking about Alain?" Said Ross.

"The Joke's on Nick. The baton I gave him was a fake. The REAL baton is right here!"

"Thank god we have you on board Alain" Said Al.

ATWCe17.jpg

ATWCe18.jpg

"We've got some really bad news" Said Ross. "That rapid de-pressurization has caused us some severe problems. The pressure in the cabin is so low compared to the cockpit that we are in danger of literally being blown out of the sky".

"Dang" Said Alain "Can we make it to Riyadh?"

"I'll try" Said Ross. "But look at these Cabin Altitude warnings!"

ATWCe19.jpg

The crew fight on...

ATWCe24.jpg

"We might be able to make it" said Al. "But we'll need an element of luck if we are to do it".

ATWCe25.jpg

ATWCe26.jpg

Strangely, Alain picked up a marker pen and circled part of the overhead panel.

"Why did you do that?" Asked Ross.

"Well... This guy from the forums... Jack I think is his name... Told me to "drop a hint" of his next upcoming hardware project for his home cockpit Simulator setup. I hope I'm not giving too much away to the viewers..."

ATWCe27.jpg

The crew have now started their decent.

The three are now at Riyadh, almost on the ILS for Runway 33L at King Kahled.

"Riyadh Tower. Arkia ATWC 905 type Boeing 757, decening towards runway 33L, rapid depressurization."

"Acknowledged Arkia ATWC 905. Cleared to land runway 33L. Good luck".

"Cleared to land runway 33L" Announced al.

"Alain. You saved us, the baton and ATWC IIi. Would you like the honours?" Asked Ross.

"Sure thing." Replied Alain.

ATWCe37.jpg

TOUCHDOWN!!!

ATWCe38.jpg

Alain exits runway 33L.

ATWCe39.jpg

"We made it!" Shouted Alain.

"Yup! I can't belive we managed to put her down after what happened in the air..." Said Al.

"C'mon guys" Said Ross, "LEts shut her down and go and cool off".

"Agreed!" Replied Alain and Al.
