Anti Virus Software

Recommended Posts

I've recently bought a new laptop for my business which came with McAfee pre-installed for 30 days. The question now is which Anit-Virus do I go with?

The guy in the shop was trying to sell me all kinds of stuff and I said 'no I'll use my own'. I mentioned AVG and he scoffed and claimed it was rubbish compared to what it once was. I've used it for many years and never had a problem, but just wondered what AV Software other people use and how easy is it to work with? Norton is a deffinate no-no, I had it ages ago and it was a nightmare

Thanks

I use Microsoft Security Essentials now, the others I find too obtrusive.

+1. It works. It's free, it's about as unobtrusive as these things get, and if you can live with it saying "Microsoft" on the tin, it's also well regarded.

If you're remembering the old MS OneCare (which was a bit of a joke), and thinking this is more of the same; don't. This really is seriously proper malware protection.

I've been running Avast! on the last two or three home computers. No problem what so ever. There's a free version that's just AV, and a payware version that adds Firewall and SPAM filter if I remember correctly.

I use Norton and like it a lot. It has improved much over the years and is quite customizable. However, we use Trend Micro at my office and I find that to be quite obtrusive. Lots of false positives.

My wife runs her own IT business and for her clients who are too cheap to pay for antivirus software, she installs AVG. It seems to do the job, but remember, you get what you pay for. It's rather basic. She would not personally install on her own PC as it lacks a lot of features that you get with name brands like Norton, McAfee or Trend Micro. Avast is another freeware , but one that she says is worse than AVG. Keep away from that one matey.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Stu: AVAST !

By far the best I've tried.

Often comes out near the top in reviews, but right clicking the icon lets you stop it for an hour or until restart. Very handy.

Nice lady voice informs me when it's updated... very quick and unobtrusive too.

Always turn it off for gaming though.
