De-icing aircraft is a big deal, of course. The large airports in the northern US have plenty of snow removal equipment for the runways, taxiways and ramps and are pretty good about keeping things moving. Closing the fields generally occurs when blizzard conditions set in, heavy snow with high winds moving the stuff horizontally. Heavy snow in moderate winds is usually a delaying factor, but doesn't normally shut down the big places with CAT III approaches and such. Many of them are using ground control radar, too, so it doesn't matter that the guy in the tower can't see the AC on the ground - he can see the transponers on his scope. The 737 that overran the runway at Midway a couple of years ago was landing in that kind of weather, as I recall. I made a Cargo Pilot flight into CYYZ (Toronto-Pearson) not too long ago and printed the airport diagram. They have a de-icing pad as big as some airports (it appears on the diagram to have six parallel aircraft lanes through it) and a separate frequency for ground traffic through the de-icing process. The old movie, "Airport" (Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, George Kennedy - not "Airplane") shows winter operations at the fictional "Lincoln International", a thinly disguised O'Hare.
