Putting Together a Puzzle

Recommended Posts

Hey people, it's just about time I got a good gaming PC. Note that I'm not a hardcore gamer; just want to get smooth FPS w/ FRAPS on in FSX, and about 30 FPS for other games (Crysis, COD, etc.). I also plan to do some video editing, but not much. Here are the specs:

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor

EVGA SuperClocked 01G-P3-1563-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP

ASUS P8P67 DELUXE (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W

COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1 "Heatpipe Direct Contact" Long Life Sleeve 120mm CPU Cooler

COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Other software I'm planning to install:

FSX Gold Edition

Camtasia Studio

Norton Anti Virus 2011

Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010

FRAPS

Please offer any suggestions for improvement. I'm aiming for less than $2000 USD, no more than $2500 USD.

Hi IUPT

I am far from an expert but I would advise getting a couple of drives the main one being either a WD Veloceraptor or SSD for the O/S and programs and keeping the Caviar for data/backup/downloads etc.

Maybe increase the PSU to at least 850, preferably higher otherwise when you want to add in that extra...... there's not enough juice to power it.

I now back-away in reverence to the experts!

I'm no expert on hardware either, but just to be sure double check that the 1155 socket runs with dual memory sticks.

Some I5 & I7 processors require three memory circuits if I remember correctly.

And I fully agree with Joe on the hard drives.

I think budget comes into it as well Andrew, SSD's are still very expensive and you would be talking a lot of money for a 256.

128 dedicated to flight sim would be fine, if you were a scenery junkie then don't forget it takes up huge amounts of disk space. Also consider that if you make the SSD your boot drive with your operating system and a couple of programs you have already taken a fair hit on storage.

Have a look at your present set up and disk usage and use that to make your judgement
