ddavid 149
As current Air Rally Team World Champions, we shouldn't let this opportunity pass, eh?!? Rob, Kieran and myself would welcome any of you that would like to join us in Andrew's latest rally - the Great Air Rally of South America 2011. The rally starts early next month and includes 10 stages in the hilly uplands of Colombia. In the past we've used twin props: the venerable DC-3 for GAAR 2010 and the Shorts 330 for Mutley's Easter Bunny event. It's likely that we'll use a similar twin for GARSA, but if you've different ideas, then shoot! Please reply to this post to show your interest or ask any questions about the Team Mutley activities. Thanks! Ciao - Dai.
hurricanemk1c 195
OK - who's organising the flight to Colombia?
rob16584 42
I'm up for it, count me in. I should be able to make a couple of flights I think, but it will most likely be towards the back end of September.
needles 1,013
Hi Dai, This sounds great and I have some South American scenery also but I am bogged down with my Granddaughters Dolls Hoose at the moment and I am also away on Saturday 27th for a weeks holiday with Mags, and grand kids. Bude here we come. It should be quite a good rally and I hope there will be plenty of takers. Good luck and I will be popping back to catch the screen shots. Cheers and regards Brian :001_th_smiles89:
stu7708 244
Good luck guys. I'll sit this one out, again. Not enough time on my hands right now.
ddavid 149
Hi Gang! We have currently have 3 pilots for Team Mutley's entry for GARSA 2011 - Kieran, Rob and me. We'd like at least 2 more, so why not take the plunge? If you've not taken part in one of Andrew's Rallies before, now's your chance - we can give you plenty of advice! Here's a basic list of the 10 Flights for GARSA 2011 (more details here): Leg From/To nm Submit by Pilot 1 Bogota SKBO to Ocana SKOC 226 03 Sep 11 Dai (provisional) 2 Ocana SKOC to Malaga SKLA 103 05 Sep 11 3 MalagaSKLA to Yaguarito SK53 190 08 Sep 11 4 Yaguarito SK53 to Pitalito SKPI 208 11 Sep 11 5 Pitalito SKPI to Ipiales SKIP 115 13 Sep 11 6 Ipiales SKIP to Cali SKCL 179 16 Sep 11 7 Cali SKCL to Medellin SKMD 168 18 Sep 11 8 Medellin SKMD to Necocli SKNC 152 20 Sep 11 9 Necocli SKNC to Santa Marta SKSM 220 23 Sep 11 10 Santa Marta SKSM to Cartagena SKCG 86 25 Sep 11 If no-one minds, I'll bag Leg 1. Please select first and second choice Legs and I'll sort out the roster accordingly. Lastly, we need to confirm the aircraft. Kieran likes the DH104 Dove (I've tried the Britsim freeware model and it's fine). Maybe you'd prefer another twin - please put up your ideas so we can get on with the Test Flights, which each Team member must fly in order to get the Team average. Cheers - Dai. allardjd 1,853
Dai, I'm going to decline, with regrets. It will be a stretch, but I'm going to go for the whole enchilada flying a payware AC. See you in the Andes. :001_th_smiles89: John

hurricanemk1c 195
Right, I'll get going with the Test flight! All my flights are planned using Plan-G - the first time I've used it since the MEBAR - how easy to use!
hurricanemk1c 195
OK - done a test flight at 100kts IAS / 123kts GS, took me 35.61 minutes

ddavid 149
Test Flight in Dove completed: KIAS - 100 approx; tail wind 22 knots (Mag 273); Time = 32.33 min. Bit faster than you, Kieran, but close enough, eh? Average Test Flight Time thus = 33.97 min. As Rob hasn't got round to sending in his time, which should be similar (!), I'll enter 33.97 as Team Mutley's time. Hope that's O.K. Also, I've updated the TM Roster to show some of the early Legs that the three of us will share - provisionally, anyway... Leg From/To nm Submit by Pilot 1 Bogota SKBO to Ocana SKOC 226 03 Sep 11 Dai 2 Ocana SKOC to Malaga SKLA 103 05 Sep 11 Dai (provisional) 3 Malaga SKLA to Yaguarito SK53 190 08 Sep 11 Kieran (provisional) 4 Yaguarito SK53 to Pitalito SKPI 208 11 Sep 11 Rob (provisional) 5 Pitalito SKPI to Ipiales SKIP 115 13 Sep 11 Dai (provisional) 6 Ipiales SKIP to Cali SKCL 179 16 Sep 11 Kieran 7 Cali SKCL to Medellin SKMD 168 18 Sep 11 8 Medellin SKMD to Necocli SKNC 152 20 Sep 11 9 Necocli SKNC to Santa Marta SKSM 220 23 Sep 11 Joe (pencilled in) 10 Santa Marta SKSM to Cartagena SKCG 86 25 Sep 11 Kieran (provisional) We can amend this roster when Rob surfaces - thanks. hurricanemk1c 195
Dai - I flew the Test flight with no wind etc with the supplied saved flight But 33.97 will do!
mutley 4,498
I was just going to do the test flight but I am happy to go along with the time. :001_th_smiles89:
allardjd 1,853
Wait until you see the approach into that first destination... It looks to me like it's going to need a descent into the valley to the NE and then come up that to the airport at about a 30 degree angle to the runway. Put any thoughts of a downwind, base and final right out of your mind. I haven't flown it yet but have done some scouting. John
mutley 4,498
I've printed out your plates John for both departure and destinations for my flight John, very handy, thanks :001_th_smiles89:
allardjd 1,853
There's not much to SKNC. I think that's the shortest runway of all the rally airports, but at least it's not way up in the mountains. Santa Marta looks a lot more civilized. Several of these airports were not much more than a strip, with no published radio frequencies, no lights, no MS fuel pump, no navaids. Must be a great place to live. I suspect that a lot of un-declared US-bound "cargo" goes out of some of them. John
rob16584 42
I'll do the remaining 2 legs if that is OK guys? Sorry to have gone underground (literally). I've been in London for the weekend
mutley 4,498
It's fine by me Rob, we can do with the support. I am not getting on that well with the Dove, I never realised I would miss the VC so much My throttle quadrant has proved to be the saviour. I have made my flight once, just a practice, as I reckon the time was way out, I must have had a tail wind. Joe

ddavid 149
Here's a preview of the Team Mutley repaint for the DH104 Dove: If you like it, I'll upload it to the Hangar Download section. John, tried your suggested approach to SKOC - fairly scarey, but do-able... Rob, many thanks - have put you in for those 'empty' Legs: Leg From/To nm Submit by Pilot 1 Bogota SKBO to Ocana SKOC 226 03 Sep 11 Dai 2 Ocana SKOC to Malaga SKLA 103 05 Sep 11 Dai 3 Malaga SKLA to Yaguarito SK53 190 08 Sep 11 Kieran 4 Yaguarito SK53 to Pitalito SKPI 208 11 Sep 11 Rob 5 Pitalito SKPI to Ipiales SKIP 115 13 Sep 11 Dai 6 Ipiales SKIP to Cali SKCL 179 16 Sep 11 Kieran 7 Cali SKCL to Medellin SKMD 168 18 Sep 11 Rob 8 Medellin SKMD to Necocli SKNC 152 20 Sep 11 Rob 9 Necocli SKNC to Santa Marta SKSM 220 23 Sep 11 Joe (pencilled in) 10 Santa Marta SKSM to Cartagena SKCG 86 25 Sep 11 Kieran That's all the Legs spoken for - Thanks, Lads. BTW, you should get a 27 knot tail wind on the Test Flight if you're at 13500 ft. Team Mutley Registration has been accepted by Andrew - had trouble with email addresses. Ciao - Dai.
