Pick and Mix - Part 5

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

I managed to find a little spare time so I compiled another random selection of 10 screen shots I taken over the past 15 months or so.

So please do enjoy the view (unedited shots apart from resized & JPG'd, many free/payware addons & ENB/REX settings are various):

Your comments and praise is welcome and much appreciated, cheers folks.

Unreal quality. What are your system specs?

Thanks, nothing special, at least not compared to nowadays, custom build PC, i7 950 4.2Ghz, 6Gb DDR3 Mushkin Silverline, Asus Sabertooth x58, 2x Zotac GTX580, Revodrive x2 480Gb PCIe x4 for FSX, Mushkin Callisto Deluxe 240Gb O/S, 2x Samsung F4 2Tb, NZXT Phantom White, CM Silent Pro Gold 1000W, Win 7 64Bit Home.

Some outstanding shot's Soya.

This is the type of quality that I dream about, it would be very interesting to find out what video settings you are useing to make them?

Cheer's...Graham...

Thanks Graham, the quality of my screen shots are down to a few main factors, 1) the quality of the addons I use within the screen shot 2) the resolution FSX is being run at plus the AA & AF settings 3) the lighting and/or ENB settings within a shot.

1) The quality of the addons speaks for itself, the better the visuals of an addon, the easier it is to make it look good in a screen shot. A screen shot is only as good as the visual quality of any aircraft or scenery that it is depicting.

2) I run FSX at 2560x1600, which is a very high resolution which contains much detail especially as I use NIck's Nvidia inspector setup with uses AA 8SQ AF16x, so a screen shot taken at that resolution then carefully JPG'd and resized down to 1280x768, will have a much higher level of detail and sharper image then if FSX was running at 1280x768 and the same image was taken at that resolution.

3) I feel that lighting is everything when it comes to a photograph or screen shot. We see what we see due to light particles bouncing off a surfaces and hitting our retina which then our brains translate to light/images & colours. So getting just the right amount of lighting and angle of lighting can either make or break a screen shot. FSX is pretty primitive compared to most modern computer games nowadays, it still uses DX9 (DX10 isn't properly implemented) it has poor shadowing techniques (stencil shadows yuck) and afaik has only 1 light source, the sun, no light reflection from any other surfaces or object making it very hard to get a realistic screen shot. So in order to get a decent shot from FSX you need to ensure both the time of day and the angle of the shot is such that the lighting is correct and optimum. I have seen many superb screen shots on the forums but looking closer, the lighting is fairly often, incorrect. This is where the ENB mod helps out, it improves the lighting within DX9 making it a little easier to get a more 'realistic' effect.

outstanding stuff, with the Connie and 707 being my favorites

Cheers and I agree, the older more classical aircraft had much more character and looks, as they say, they don't build them like they used to.

Great shots Soya and the Connie taking off is just superb.

Thanks Joe, a classic plane from a classic era.

Thank's very much for the info Soya  .

Also want to ask you, whats the best way to get rid of jagged edge's, I have a number of screen shot's that have been spoiled due to the markings on the aircraft having jagged edges on them?

Thanks again...Graham...

Well there are 2 ways to improve and reduce the jaggies in FSX, 1) Increased the Anti Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering, if you are using a Nvidia GFX card I would highly recommend using Nvidia Inspector and setup a profile for FSX according to Nick's settings, I think I have mine set at AA 8SQ AF16x. 2) A higher resolution, the higher the resolution you are using to run your sim, the more pixels per shot you will get and the sharper the detail becomes, I use 2560x1600 but that is an extreme resolution which can only be handled by specific monitors. Those are the 2 main factors AFAIK, hope that helps.

absolutely stunning shots Soya (ED - as if we can expect anything less from him!) I'm especially loving the RAF 32Sqn "Royal" A109E 'Power' set against that stunning scenery in shot #3!

Thank you for the kind words and good spotting on the RAF A109E.

Excellent shots Soya some nice aircraft and some stunning scenery too. :wow:

Thank you.

Just one Word AWESOME

Just one reply, Thanks. ;)

Stunning job.

Cheers.
