Thankyou Steve Jobs - Where would FS be without him ?

A good question that no one has asked yet in the media.

In fact, where would Microsoft be without him and Apple.

Competition is essential for innovation and efficiency, and I think it unlikely that the XBox 360 / PS3 would exist if Apple had never been around.

And, flight simulation would probably still be 20 years behind.

I have never bought an Apple product, but I appreciate its importance in the world of technology.

Just a thought.

Very, very sad. So young. So much more he could have done. He has given us so much.

I've been in the Apple fold for most of my life. First computer was an Apple ][ Plus. Second was an Apple ][ GS.

I learned to program on the Apple. The first flight sim program I ever used was by SubLogic on the Apple ][ Plus. I would not be in the software business now if it were not for Jobs and Wozniak.

The technology world will never be the same. We owe him a debt of gratitude for the way he was able to transform his visions of technology into the brilliant design of products he gave us.

Apple stuff was way too expensive in the early years, although I did work with Macs during the mid-90s (ironically, during the "wilderness years"), then I went back to PCs about the same time that SJ went back to Apple. And it was only this Spring that I got back into using a Mac, although I've been using & enjoying a range of i-things for quite some time.

By a strange quirk, the first piece of software I ever used was written by Woz, (Apple's other co-founder), in 1979, on a Commodore PET.

There's much that we wouldn't have, or wouldn't work so well, if it wasn't for Steve Jobs. RIP.

Bill Gates has done far more for the world than Steve Jobs ever did.

That may be true, but it took an awful lot of prodding and shaming and bad press before he decided to. Most of it from his friend Warren Buffett.

But on the other hand, Steve Jobs wealth, while far greater than most of us will ever dream of, was only a fraction of Bill Gates' wealth.

Bill Gates is the world's second wealthiest person ($56 billion). He used to be worth even more before Microsoft stock fell in recent years.

Steve Jobs, at the time of his death, was ranked 110th ($11 billion). Still a lot of money. But much of that came only within the last few years as Apple's stock value climbed, though the majority of his money is from his stake in Disney.

And recently, over the past few years, I think he has been dealing with his own mortality and making sure his family would be secure after his inevitable death. I had a relative who died from pancreatic cancer. Took less than a year before he succumbed. Steve was fortunate in that he was able to live so long after the diagnosis. Patrick Swayze had only 20 months from diagnosis to death. Pancreatic cancer is a killer. I'm sure that once he got the diagnosis, he realized it was only a matter of time.

RIP Steve Jobs, from the Apple range of products I own an Ipod and love it. From what I've read he did a lot of good in the world, also his particular form of cancer is one of the worst most painful incurable ways to go, nobody deserves that ... RIP

As regards Bill Gates, we can say what we like about him but he was one of Microsoft Flight simulators biggest supporters and it should come as no surprise that once he finally handed over the keys to Steve Ballmer the MS FS franchise was culled, nobody will ever know the exact details but it was on or around that transition period, now that its resurrected again nobody still really knows what's going on with MS Flight, with rumours of it being halted then re-started once again? interesting stuff going on in the background too.

This is not the thread for that though.

Agree another place for this conversation...but will say that it wasn't Flight simulator that was culled...it was Aces Studio.

Not a bad thing necessarily.
