SkyMaster Over London

Recommended Posts

With reasonable VFR conditions and a planned route from EGSX south to EGKH (Headcorn) I thought I would take the opportunity to do a little sightseeing over London. I had to be quick and careful being online and smack in the middle of both London City departure and Heathrow approach.

Ready for a crosswind departure from EGSX

Not to bad a day for January despite the wind

The wind caught me slightly off guard after takeoff and climbed out a smidge steeper than planned.

Just before getting to London City I cleared for traffic-announced intentions and flew west along the Thames

Oh look Big Ben!

Tower Bridge, a slightly mis-placed St Pauls, and the Pickle :D

Crossing London City with traffic backtracking and a nice view towards Heathrow over the city

Visibility went to crap south of London and I had a fairly close encounter with that transmission tower. Good VFR landmark though.

Getting the gear down near Headcorn. The 337 turns into a bit of a pig while the gear doors are open.

Bit of a nasty crosswind during my touch n go and full stop landings. Something like 15-16kts west-to-east. The 337 handled it just fine.

And down for a cup of tea at the Tiger Club. Check out the wind sock!

I love that 337. Awesome plane and loads of fun to fly. Very stable even in snotty winds on short airfields.

As a final though today I do have a bad habit of inadvertently flying into IMC with aircraft not kitted for deicing. I was flying my DHC-2 Beaver yesterday in really lovely weather and while climbing found myself in thick snot and the OAT went from 40-10 degrees (F) just like that....a real hazard of online flight...abrupt and dangerous weather shifts and X-Plane is pretty unforgiving in modelling icing conditions. I wound up going from 6000' to 3000' before recovering and went on to continue my trip VFR.

The plucky Beaver

Cheers for looking!

Ted

p.s. REX and UK2000 VFR airfields in use with the 337.
