dodgy-alan 1,587
There is a clue in the design, It used the wings from a more well known aircraft in the companies catalogue.
Andrew Godden 943
It was designed to be a star, but didn't quite make it. I have been a bit quiet guys, organising the GAAR, but I would heed that advice, John. Cheers Andrew
allardjd 1,853
Oh, I know what it is - just have too many irons in the fire to post another, so I'm sitting on my hands. John
brett 2,315
Me too. Hoping some others will give it a try, it only took me 10 minutes after researching aircraft of that era with canards.
hurricanemk1c 195
Lockheed L-133 if I remember correctly - proposed during the Second World War (or shortly before)

hurricanemk1c 195
Is this too hard? Or are you all scurrying through old books on this particular, later rather controversial, Operating Requirement
rob16584 42
Looks like something from star wars
allardjd 1,853
Never built, obviously. Can you imagine the yaw if an engine failed? Those things are WAY out on the wing. John
dodgy-alan 1,587
One of Barnes Wallis's finest designs, sadly the British Government got into bed with the French and all the work on this was stopped in favour of Concorde. Could have been an interesting idea though. I'll let someone else name this particular bird though!
dodgy-alan 1,587
I kept quiet because I knew right away what it was. My Dad used to take me to this companies main factory in, ********* which is now a a museum of course.
hurricanemk1c 195
Many a famous aircraft came out of that factory, including a lot beginning with V - although this one doesn't
Andrew Godden 943
Clearly some form of SST, but quite frankly, I find this far fetched design a bit hard to swallow. Cheers Andrew
allardjd 1,853
It might have hit a Grand Slam if it had ever been built... John

hurricanemk1c 195
Over to you Brett! Techincally, my photo was of the Swallow 'momentum bomber', but was developed with the airliner
brett 2,315
Haha, I thought Alan had it when he mentioned the designer Sir Barns Wallis. I looked him up to learn more and came across the link to the model and posted it, I know you both enjoy them.
Andrew Godden 943
Is that an answer Andrew or not? Kieran, It was an answer, a veiled one indicating I knew what it was, but one designed to give the others a go as Alan and I often have too much of the lion's share of correct guesses. Cheers Andrew
Quickmarch 488
And rightly so IMHO. The two of you obviously work very hard at it and have a wonderful depth of knowledge.
allardjd 1,853
Yep, what he said... Alan and Andrew are hands-down the best at this. I did figure this one out, but didn't know it right off the bat. My "Grand Slam" comment is a left-handed reference to Barnes Wallis - the Grand Slam bomb being one of his inventions. dodgy-alan 1,587
As soon as this appeared I knew exactly what it was, but like Andrew I left it for someone else to have a bite. Many years ago when I was about 10my dad was delivering tyres to BAC at Weybridge and as was often the case my Brother and I had gone out with him for the day in his truck. Whilst he was offloading we were taken into one of the offices for tea and biccies and there before us was a huge model of this aircraft. It was on a big metal display stand and must have been around 4 ft long. We had never seen anything like it, Bearing in mind that in 1970 most aircraft were either Boeings, Douglases, Comets or VC-10s and various propliners etc this thing was just something out of science fiction. It was a simply awesome looking aircraft that sadly never saw the light of day. I cannot be certain but I think this is the model we saw. However by that time it had a different display stand, http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread365340/pg1

Andrew Godden 943
I reckon you could pack a lot into this one, probably about 750 worth. Cheers Andrew
