dodgy-alan 1,587
I know exactly what it is but I'll leave it to someone else to have a go. A large book entitled German Aircraft of WW2 lists everything they ever concieved and this is one of them.

Andrew Godden 943
It's the Nord 1402A 'Gerfaut'. It first flew on 15 January 1954 and on 03 August 1954 was the first aircraft in Europe to exceed Mach 1 in level flight without afterburners.
dodgy-alan 1,587
Thats the one Andrew, It's an interesting aircraft and it's design led to the superb Mirage series of fighters. Over to you my friend!
allardjd 1,853
Looks like there must be, oh, about eight seconds of fuel in those wings. John
dodgy-alan 1,587
I'd imagine there was a tank in that dorsal fairing John, Having said that the the original Mirage had very short legs as well, Probably OK for point defence but that's about it.
brett 2,310
Great job Andrew It looked shorter in the first picture .
Andrew Godden 943
Alan's second photo shows the Nord 1405 'Gerfaut II' which was developed in 1956 and had a more refined structure and a clipped wing.
allardjd 1,853
That's been tried - the Me-163 Komet was pretty much the original point-defense interceptor. I don't think it worked too well but it must have been a hell of a ride if the fuel didn't go critical in the tanks first. John
Andrew Godden 943
The clock is running to see how obvious this is. Cheers Andrew
