allardjd 1,853
Could that be an IL-10 - NATO Code Name "Beast"? John
dodgy-alan 1,587
Sukhoi SU 1 /
Andrew Godden 943
Not German. John and Alan, you are in the right country, but neither the Il-10 or Su-1/3. Cheers Andrew
dodgy-alan 1,587
Looking at that tail fin I reckon it comes from the Lavochkin stable.
brett 2,314
I thought that too Alan. There are many aircraft that come close so far but the covers on the main gear do not match up.
hurricanemk1c 195
IL-2?
Andrew Godden 943
With Brett only having put the La-7 up recently, I wasn't going to go with something from the Lavochkin stable, so sorry Alan it's not. Nor is it the Il-2, Kieran. Without giving too much away, it's not Ilyushin, Lavochkin or Sukhoi. That should start to narrow the field somewhat. Cheers Andrew
Dizzy 0
It really looks like a Mig-3 but those gear doors are wrong
dodgy-alan 1,587
It looks like a Mig 1, but the undercarriage doesn't look right.
dodgy-alan 1,587
no idea why that went in 3 times, the page froze, and then that's what happened! EDIT: Sorted Al... Joe
Andrew Godden 943
Not a MiG of any type either. OK, final clues before I reveal the answer. In fact, this aircraft was developed about the same time as the MiG 1 and it's first flight was on 18 May 1940, 6 weeks after the MiG 1. The aircraft was designed by a former employee of Polikarpov, but after 3 prototypes were built, the project was cancelled in 1941. Another photo. Cheers Andrew
Dizzy 0
Pashinin I-21?
Andrew Godden 943
Well done, Sean, the Pashinin I-21 it is. The initial photo concealed it's true identity sufficiently, so as to not make it too obvious. Over to you. Cheers Andrew
brett 2,314
Way to go Sean Another good one Andrew
Dizzy 0
The hard part about guessing russian aircraft is they all look the same unless it's an LaGG or IL and then all the LaGG's look alike and all the IL's look alike. Silly russians.
allardjd 1,853
...except the Tu-4, which looked exactly like a B-29. John
brett 2,314
While going through the different aircraft trying to find the answers here, I have been surprised how many look very similar but are from different countries. I realize that alot of them are renamed and sold but it also looks like there was a bit of plan stealing going on too. This is a great thread to learn about all the multitudes of aircraft built of the years for a newbie like me and I highly recommend getting involved in it. Just be ready for exhaustive search marathons that start to get obsessive.
hurricanemk1c 195
Well the Tu-4 is a reverse engineered B-29, which also dropped Russia's first atomic bomb
