Andrew Godden 943
That would have been my guess, Alan, but you beat me to it.
rosariomanzo 545
Al (and Andrew), well done! Over to you! (I do like this aircraft)
Quickmarch 488
The counter rotating props were way ahead of their time. Very common now, especially in high performance boat drives. Must have been one heck of an airplane.
dodgy-alan 1,587
It was a great aircraft, like a P51 on steroids! unfortunately it arrived just as the RAF were getting into jets, the war was about to end and they had hundreds of fighters already. Political shoving from the big companies also made sure that Martin Baker was sidelined as being too small to build the aircraft in large enough numbers. It remained a "might have been" sadly. dodgy-alan 1,587
Ok this one should be reasonably easy
Andrew Godden 943
Alan, If I said it was black, I'd be right, but I'll be courteous. The loss of this contract was the demise of this manufacturer. Cheers Andrew
dodgy-alan 1,587
Correct Andrew, but lets see who else knows what it is!
Andrew Godden 943
Correct Andrew, but lets see who else knows what it is! Hence my cryptic post and play on words!
dodgy-alan 1,587
Whats more worrying is that back in the 70s there was a range of condoms with the same name!

Quickmarch 488
What about the "Glow in the Dark" ones available in the machine down at the local pub? Name escapes me.
dodgy-alan 1,587
This one certainly didn't glow in the dark, in fact it's handling was rather dull considering it's intended role. It was the last aircraft this illustrious manufacturer made and was a sad end to such a brilliant back cataloque of aircraft. Thankfully plenty of it's previous aircraft survive. dodgy-alan 1,587
come on guys, surely someone will do me the curtissy of knowing this one.
Andrew Godden 943
It also shares its name with a very famous helicopter that is in extensive use, in different variants, around the world.
allardjd 1,853
OK, found it... Curtiss A-43, P-87 / F-87 Blackhawk. The helicopter clue and the "black" clue from earlier lined right up and the light bulb went on. I went looking for an aircraft named "Blackhawk" and found it. John
dodgy-alan 1,587
At last! It certainly is the Curtiss XF87 Blackhawk. Over to you John.

allardjd 1,853
Well, you had to all but put it on a plate for me. I had no idea Curtis was in business late enough to build a jet. Will try to get one up tonight. John
Quickmarch 488
So to speak. Need a Curtis? PS: Thanks to whoever (probably Joe or John) got rid of my fumble-fingered post.
