J G 927
I worked for a time as volunteer at Brooklands Museum Weybridge, where this aircraft was conceived, along with many other world leading aircraft. All of which were vandalized by stupid politicians. A world leading industry that could have employed thousands was recklessly thrown away. I am not a proponent of the death penalty, but I would have personally pulled the trigger on those responsible. One interesting object at this museum is a wind tunnel model (which can be seen http://www.flickr.com/photos/noj-johnson/5138683651/ ) From a better view it looks almost exactly like an F-111, except the engine intakes are square like the Tornado and not rounded as on the F-111. The advanced swing wing design for this model, which had no name, just a number, was shared with the Americans, who subsequently produced the F-111 from it, Issues arose with the aircraft with it suffering engine flameouts and as a result the engine intakes had to be redesigned. The old boys at Brooklands who worked on the project stated that if square intakes were used, no such issues would have arisen. I don't know if that is correct, but the swing wing Tornado didn't have such issues!
Andrew Godden 945
One of two experimental aircraft produced, that first flew in 1984. They were built from the airframe of an existing well known fighter. They tested a forward-swept wing, canard control surfaces, and other novel aircraft technologies. The aerodynamic instability of this arrangement increased agility but required the use of computerized fly-by-wire control. Composite materials were used to control the aeroelastic divergent twisting experienced by forward-swept wings. But that's as much as I am saying and someone else can name exactly what it is. dodgy-alan 1,587
Am I right in thinking the cockpit and nose section came from an F5A?
Andrew Godden 945
Exactly correct, Alan. In fact, the entire forward fuselage and nose landing gear, with the control surface actuators and main landing gear coming from the F-16. Cheers Andrew
dodgy-alan 1,587
I know exactly what it is but will let someone else take it. Suffice to say they certainly raided lots of other companies parts bins when they built it! Anything to keep costs down!
Andrew Godden 945
I know exactly what it is..... You're kidding, aren't you? Cheers Andrew
