allardjd 1,853
Great shots, Alan, and a fine old Warbird. I got to see a pair of them in action last November at Jacksonville. They were the only ones at the show to use a parachute for landing, and they used it for every landing they made. Is it just me, or does it appear that they have got the exhausts a little exaggerated on that model? John
hurricanemk1c 195
Great shots Alan - there's a Phantom confirmed for RIAT, but sadly only static display
stu7708 244
Ah.. that brings back some memories... The Phantom, along with the F111 Aardwark, was my two favorite planes back in the days of playing "Fighter Bomber" on the Atari ST Great shots of a great bird Alan!
mutley 4,498
Alan, A superb range of shots, that first one reminds me of the Thunderbirds livery. @John, I can see what you mean about the shape/size of the tail pipes!
mutley 4,498
Great shots Alan - there's a Phantom confirmed for RIAT, but sadly only static display Surely it has to fly in Chuck, there's always the days before the actual show where you can watch all the arrivals? dodgy-alan 1,587
Re the Tailpipes It's possible that the model designer was basing his design on the British F4J version which did indeed have bigger tail pipes, the reason for this was that the RAF and RN fitted Rolls Royce Spey turbofans to their aircraft instead of the American Allisons. The Speys were somewhat bigger than the standard spec ones. (it also gave them commonality with the Buccanner which also used Speys. It meant the Carrier did not have to carry spares for 2 different types of engine !Our Phantoms were the most powerful versions of the lot although the top end speed wasn't as good (by a few mph! there wasn't that much difference). The extra power was needed for the shorter decks on the British Carriers. Joe, The first pic looks like a Thunderbirds aircraft because it IS a Thunderbirds aircraft!!
