allardjd 1,853
Meteorite crash in Russia: UFO fears spark panic in the Urals/ http://rt.com/news/meteorite-crash-urals-chelyabinsk-283/ "A series of explosions in the skies of Russia’s Urals region, reportedly caused by a meteorite shower, has sparked panic in three major cities. Witnesses said that houses shuddered, windows were blown out and cellphones have stopped working." ...and then there's this... "According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers." Re the second quote - I seriously doubt that. John
britfrog 180
Is it April the first by any chance?
stu7708 244
That second part does sound very dubious indeed... although it's a pretty large and very hot source for a heat seeking missile to lock on to It does look like it breaks into pieces in some of the videos, but I guess that could be an effect of the intense heat. brett 2,316
Looks very odd the way it travels. Why the one contrail splits into two then back to one again in the video is weird. They say over 500 meteors hit the Earth every year, most into the ocean. That includes the ones that are not more than the size of a pebble. I hope in the New Russia that the poor guy in Emergency Ministry that sent out the early SMS warning really only gets fired fired
M31 0
Seriously, that was some amazing footage captured over Russia, it really looked like something out of the movie Armageddon in one news clip I saw ... amazing. Glad nobody was seriously hurt. And as we all know we had a close call with another meteorite shortly after that came so close to Earth it was inside the orbit of many of our satellites, coincidence? its not beyond the bounds of possibility that both of them were part of one object in the past that collided with something else, probably not though and indeed pure coincidence. I think its inevitable this planet will be struck by something large like this before our Sun ends and hopefully after our species has left the planet for pastures new or has become extinct. I hope I see a supernova in my lifetime.
brett 2,316
I would like to see a supernova in my lifetime but I would rather really see my son-in-law come over and change the oil in my car. Odds are probably the same.

M31 0
I would like to see a supernova in my lifetime but I would rather really see my son-in-law come over and change the oil in my car. Odds are probably the same. Oil Changes are easy! LOL, You may well see a supernova fairly soon as Betelguese is set to go off at any time, give or take 50 years! Hi Alan, yep Betelgeuse is expected to go Supernova type II in the next million years, but it could just as easily be tomorrow, the star really is very unstable and so far away it would have no harm here once this happens and I would not be surprised if our species was finally extinct in the grand scheme of things once it does go bang. It probably went bang a long time ago. We think of our species as ultimate longevity if we occasionally get to 100 measured Earth year old, but compared to the age of the known Universe, that is just a grain of sand in all the beaches on Planet Earth and so is our measured Solar System life expectancy I am well and truly humbled that our species and our life on Earth is nothing more than a blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things! Fascinating stuff and food for thought. EDIT: And as an afterthought, Betelgeuse would have needed to have exploded about 450 years ago for us to see its explosion light now ... right now
M31 0
Seriously, that was some amazing footage captured over Russia, it really looked like something out of the movie Armageddon in one news clip I saw ... amazing. Going back to this thread again, wasn't it amazing the amount of Russian car dash cams caught this live, there were hundreds of examples of this type of car cam footage shown ... LOL this would be a conspiracy theorists dream come true and probably still is, how come they all had dash cams at that moment in time they might ask? The sad reality is because they need them because of the big accident rate in the Russian states (only just learned this, heh) it gives indisputable evidence in a lot of cases ... I learned this by accident when posting a joke video to another forum about a Russian road rage accident and wondering how on earth someone had the foresight to have a camera in the dash recording every journey to capture this particular bizzare incident in particular? sadly I think this is something we will see a lot and lot more of in our own Western World now, nobody trusts insurance company's to do the right thing any-more, hard evidence is needed. I wonder how long before our insurance company's give a discount for these that have to be fitted by expensive retailers and then wonder how long they will refuse a claim without them and all the cloudy issues that might surround such tech ... heh, sorry for my cynicism This was the original bizarre Russian road rage tech that made me wonder about dash cam tech ... I'm outa touch but having recently read a Biker forum in the UK, even a lot of the Lads are using helmet mounted cams now.
