Leg 34 Launceton to Avalon

Recommended Posts

I’ve been enjoying a nice vacation in Tasmania, relaxing on the beach and doing some diving and fishing, but it’s time to head over to mainland Australia and deliver the baton for Joe.  So after a checking out of the Old Bakery Inn (a very quaint place to stay) and having a good meal at the Levee Food Co. Seaport Restaurant overlooking the marina, I hopped in my rental car and headed to the airport.

I am not too familiar with the area but I think that sign is a pretty good indication that I found Launceston Airport.

Boy, that lot sure is full,  hope I can find a spot to in which to park.

Here we go, an empty space right next to the taxi.

There’s my ride for the flight.  A beautiful Diamond DA-42!

Pack my bags and safely stow the baton.

This is a rather straightforward flight. 249 nm and only three legs from Launceston airport in Tasmania to Avalon airport in Southern Australia.  The longest being over the Bass Straight which separates Tasmania from Mainland Australia.  Hmm, maybe while I’m in Australia I can check out the Holden car factory and see where my car was built.

Doing a bit of flight planning with SkyVector.

Pretty much a straight shot of 204 nm from Launceston over to the CWS VOR.

Turning toward the LT VOR

I can pretty much just follow the Tamar river to the Bass Straight without even using the nav, but soon I will not be able to see the river at all with sun getting low in the sky.

The sun setting to the port looks beautiful

Clearing the coast and heading out over the Bass Strait for main leg of the flight

Cruising along at 142 kts and 18k ft and it's getting a bit cloudy now as it gets darker.

There she is, off in the distance, I can see the runway of our destination.

Lined up.  Ready to land.  Gear and flaps down.

Almost down now.

Touchdown!!  That  moon sure looks beautiful.

Shut down.  Baton safely delivered.

Rosario, if you want to pick up the baton, you can find me at the Motionators in the Docklands.  http://motionators.com.au/ , I hear they have a really cool full motion F1 simulator.

Hey, how do you get a nice rental car, they make me rent a bicycle. :D

Great PIREP and excellent shots. Nice choice of aircraft too, you could say it is now a diamond in the rough. ;)

Don't be too upset Brett. The rental car didn't have A/C and I never returned it to the rental office!
