dodgy-alan 1,587
How the hell did they manage it! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-30419573
The red barron 41
Impressive effort from whoever stole this! Although it was dismantled, so not that difficult to steal provided you have a truck and a gas axe. Likely broken up by whoever stole it, put on the back of a truck and taken to scrap dealer who was in on the plan to steal it, to be melted down; hence why it disappeared.
hifly 925
What do you expect in Essex? Pssst, anyone want a used hangar?
J G 927
That will have been sold as scrap by now. What a shame. Anything metal has to be bolted to the ground these days or it has gone. Back in the autumn of last year some travellers parked up in the forecourt of some recently closed but modern offices near me. They were moved on by the police a couple of days later. After they had gone the office buildings were flooded. It was found that all of the copper piping in the offices had been ripped out and stolen. The water damage to the building was huge, so much so that it may be more economical to demolish the building than to repair it.
allardjd 1,853
...and a gas axe. Cutting galvanized steel, which that stuff appears to be, with an oxy-acetylene torch is considered very hazardous. The fumes produced are toxic and can cause severe health problems. I hope whoever did it got a good snoot full. John
britfrog 180
they stole another hangar about 2 years ago from Seething in Norfolk if I remember correctly , could be the same team? it must take a well equiped team to do this though , it is not a case of heave ho you need fork lift trucks or a jcb at least plus a dirty great artic
hifly 925
The hangars are probably in an ex eastern bloc country housing some oligarchs/crime bosses Lear jet.
britfrog 180
I had the same thought Geoff.

Captain Coffee 2,030
I wouldn't think galvanized metal would be high on a salvager's Want list. On the other hand, I can't imagine anyone setting it up anywhere nearby as a private hangar. Fast truck to a private ship, possibly one that regularly carries salvage metal, taking it out of country for sale would be my bet.
allardjd 1,853
It sounds as if the pieces were pretty large (14 m X 45 m according to the linked article - that's incredibly big) and transporting them intact was probably not feasible. I suspect they cut it up and it went to a scrap dealer. Galvanized scrap here fetches about $6 per hundred pounds. John
