I liked the Like button. I know it was primarily introduced for the likes of the screen shots competition but it was sort of like handy for saying like, 'I like that'.

I was wondering like if it could be reintroduced for the general forum, I would like that.

Does anyone else feel likewise?

Geoff,

I'm sure Joe will respond more appropriately with the technical detail.  However, the 'Like' button was created specifically for the Screen Shot Competition and re-introducing at this point is somewhat problematic and would create more confusion than it's worth.

Don't despair though, for a number of the Mutley Crew guys have been talking to Joe about the possibility of the return of the 'Like' button and along the exact lines that you found it beneficial.  If I recall correctly, from what Joe has said, there is a major forum software update planned and this update could include the said button, or something similar, as a standard feature.

At this stage though, no promises.

Cheers

Andrew

Err Like, I liked the like button but, like not for the, like, screen shot competition, like.  It was, like, a good way to ,like, show your, like, interest in a post, like. Perhaps, like, the Thanks button could, like, be used instead, like, for this, like.  I would, like, like this. (question like rising intonation).

There is nothing more irritating that the excessive, and misplaced use of the word like by young people.  The exception to this is the question like rising intonation at the end of a verbal statement. It always makes me think the perpetrator, (yes it is criminal use of English), has little faith in what they are saying.

Andrew has pretty much answered this question.  :thanks:

The like button was a quick and dirty modification I made to the reputation system (which we don't use here) to use as a scoring system for the screenshot contest but it appeared to catch on elsewhere.

I really liked it too, the problem is the reputation system is a global forum feature which cannot be switched on and off forum by forum.

As Andrew also inferred, the forum software we use here is now out of date and the new version 4 is a complete re-write. I have already run conversions on our database to prepare us for an upgrade but I have read some absolute horror stories in the forum developers technical support about upgrade problems. So I am holding off for a while.

If I can find a solution quicker I will let y'all know  :hat:

So let it be global. Why not? There is lots to Like all over this board. I also liked the like button. It was a less formal way to show appreciation/see that a post was appreciated without stacking on Thanks, which to me seem more appropriate for a post that Actualy Helped an issue...like...Hey, Thanks for answering that nagging question for me Andrew..."Thanks". As opposed to "Even though I won't be buying that software you reviewed, but I really 'LIKED" the effort you put into the review".

I know the Like feature is meant to be used as a reputation feature for many forums...but, we don't really care about that do we? There are no secret board functions/access that lots of likes will accidentally open up if someone gets too many likes is there?

The "Thanks" count frankly looks like it serves as a Reputation feature here...Thanks counts end up pointing fingers at helpful people...not a bad thing imo.

Cheers

/2 cents

Matt.

Way to go Joe

the pic competition doesn’t have to be calculated by the "like"/rep votes,

though likes votes could still be used as additional indicator for the judge

This sort of response is exactly the reason against bringing the like button back.  :(

The competition will not be influenced by the like button, as it already says in rule #13 This is not open for discussion.

Please can we now let this one go and get back flying? TY

i wasn’t inferring the votes should be used to tally competition up; just as another optional indicator for the judging mod,

let’s say the judge is now down to the final two favorites; and has a hard time making up his mind; he may or may not consider the votes to help him decide,

aside from the pic competition; the like is extremely valuable for our internal communications,

many forums have an indicator (similar to new PM) to indicate whenever a member has liked your post;

i find it very convenient to keep track of comments I made after posting since this feature was introduced,
