Windows 10 .. is that 10 minutes ?

Recommended Posts

As a very staunch supporter of Windows 7, my levels of annoyance have been steadily growing over the last few weeks with this rather annoying Windows 10 icon that appeared in my toolbar.

I was never going to be suckered in to the horror of Windows H8, but this nagging and irritating tugging of my skirts (figuratively speaking as I don't wear skirts) was beginning to get my goat.

My husband thought he'd download it for a quick gander, but boy, has he had problems!  Windows 10 is probably a very apt name for this little pill; not only did it take nearly 10 hours to download and install it, he found that after 10 minutes online it would automatically shut down the LAN connection. Hour after hour, day after day, it was up for 10 minutes then down. He eventually uninstalled it and reverted back to W7.

If like him, you have no compunction whatsoever to mess with your happily running W7, or, like me, you are sick and tired of seeing that damned icon in your system tray every time you turn on, this link gives several ways of getting It gone.

I figure I'll go to Windows 10 when I have to replace this PC. The new one will no doubt come with Win 10 properly installed in a tried and tested configuration in a box built by the tens of thousands by a reputable OEM. THAT is the only way I normally change operating systems. There's safety in numbers.

I am, however, considering making an exception to that and installing it on an old H-P laptop (with Vista) that I only use for e-mail and forum-crawling when away from home. Brave, ain't I?

@John

> "Brave, ain't I?"

Well, I'd say sensible and wise (as well as being experienced in such matters, which isn't necessarily the same thing). :)

@Steph

Do take control of your Windoze updates, to avoid unwelcome nags In your toolbar and/or system tray. Look especially carefully at the "optional" updates you are presented with... ;)

Cheers,

The only time I ever upgraded to a new windows version was when I was running Vista (enough said ^_^ )

I am very happy with Win 7 and have no current plans to change. I agree with John and will get Win 10 next time I purchase a new PC that is designed with Win 10 in mind.

My wife had Win 8 on her laptop and I hate it and she just upgraded to Win 10 which looks to be an improvement, but it is not enticing me. And always wait until after the first service pack has been released.

BTW, what happened to Win 9?

Win XP -> Vista -> Win 7 -> Win 8 -> Win 10? Strange

Isn't it uncanny...

Win XP (winner) -> Vista (loser) -> Win 7 (winner) -> Win 8 (loser) -> Win 10?

Anyone see a pattern?  This bodes well for Win 10, but as someone else advised, sit on your hands, wait for SP1.

I think that MS has made a significant shift in their business plan re Windows.  Though they'll make a bundle selling Win 10 licenses to OEMs, they are also trying to drag in those with existing PCs using older versions of Windows by giving away the new OS.  I believe they intend to make their money down the road from subscriptions and cloud computing, selling us server space, cloud services and subscriptions to ever-current applications, most notably the Office Suite, but other things too.  They just might pull it off.  I think they'd rather have a monthly auto-paid fee from each of us than an occasional large purchase.  I'm still using Office 2003, a purchased update from a purchased package of Office 98.  Can  anyone remember big name applications that came with a half a cubic foot of printed documentation?

It's been a long time since I've paid MS anything directly - the only money they get from me these days is through an OEM when I buy a new PC.

Cloud computing and subscribed apps also pretty much makes the issue of software piracy disappear for them.

I agree with you on that one John... that pattern definitely does seem to go from gem to lemon, to gem, to lemon..

Lance did say that one thin W10 had going for it was that the OS took up less space on the hard drive but he said he didn't like having 'Apps' on a PC. Also all the saved hard drive space at the outset would no doubt be overtaken when you HAVE to install every update. Does it bother anyone else what Microsoft could be putting on our PCs without us even understanding or knowing?

The last straw was, of course, the break in LAN connection evert 10 minutes. The cynic in me did wonder if this was anything to do with the reports that W10 collects and transmits data from a W10 PC even when it's a) not been told to and b) when it claims it doesn't.

This cloud stuff is all well and good but it does seem rather Big Brother to me. I wonder how many government agencies will be sifting through all that cloud data

If anyone else wants to try it out, you can play for 3 or 4 weeks apparently, but you can still revert to W7, but one thing to watch with the so-called FREE upgrade..it only lasts a year then you have to pay for it. How much it cost wasn't indicated.

I think I'm going to give this one a wide berth!

The security updates for W7 will go until 2020, this gives us time for observing what happens and think about a decision.

I'm like John, will probably wait for the next PC building to have a clean install, and this is at least a year down the road.

I too keep getting that W10 box and also find it irritating, I don't want the ruddy thing, I've had enough trouble trying get to grips with W7 when I got my new PC last year. I certainly don't intend to change at the moment. I'd also heard that W10 doesn't like most of the FS systems and addons that are out there and that to me is definately a put off. I for one will NOT be taking MS up on their generous offer of a free upgrade!

Easiest way to get shot of the flag is go fight click on the date/time at the bottom right of the screen and change the notifications. . :)

Thanks Steph, got rid of the bloody thing at last and removed the update.

It will come back unless you have auto updates off.

Very true, John, i'd forgotten to mention that, as I never let my PC do anything 'automatically', so good shout.

There are more permanent resolutions on the same tag if anyone wants to play with the registry too

I always equated playing with the registry with close order drill in a minefield.  You might get away with it, but bad things can happen.

Yep, Registry 'surgery' can sometimes turn a very pretty PC into a dull looking brick, if you don't know what you're doing...I tend to avoid it if i can.

I guess that in this day and age the constant visual battering with flashing banners, side panels which never move out of eye shot however far you scroll, and annoying pop ups is just the norm. Apparrently, according to research (heaven knows what planet's inhabitants they tested), people like to see all this stuff.. maybe i'm too old school  :wacko2:

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi Folks,

A bit late but here is my take on Windows 10,  On my previous forum I followed an insider's tests and progress with the new OS (YackdownPete) lots of knowledge passed through that thread and its a shame it has all been lost, if anyone is still getting that annoying Popup thing, it came down as windows 7 update KB3035583 installing GWX.EXE programme = GetWindowsX It can be uninstalled.

Yes it is free and offered for one full year but it is an OEM where as I have the ( retail ) version currently of Win 7 home premium, as some will know the retail version of an OS can be moved from one machine to another but an OEM is supposed to live and die with the machine its installed on, if I take the upgrade route then I lose the Retail and become OEM, ( never gunna happen right ? )

I am in no rush to move to Windows 10 though reports are now indicating that things are improving as far as we are concerned in flight simulation, they will have to improve a whole lot more before I  switch, Note also that with the free upgrade path as I understood things, there is no control over updates, you take what they send no choice. I can think of a good number of occasions where an update has caused a flight sim problem. more recently that in P3D the runway lights disappeared due to an update.

With the retail version of  Win 10 you can control the updates at least and move the OS to another machine,  I will be staying with windows 7 for some time to come I think. as some of you are, but when and if I do upgrade it will be a retail  OS.

Regards

Tony.
