a Belgian over the Alps

Recommended Posts

I started in Grenoble, destination Orange Caritat

ss20873.jpg

we leave Grenoble behind and climb over the Vercors

ss20878.jpg

the Vercors is a large limestone coral reef from the Cretaceous and now forms a large plateau

ss20885.jpg

we have nice weather for our flight, just a few isolated clouds

ss20888.jpg

and an excellent view in all directions

ss20890.jpg

we arrive at the town of Die, famous for its bubbly wine, the Clairette de Die

ss20892.jpg

and this also marks the end of the Vercors, just behind Die we have the vertical cliffs of the edge of the plateau

ss20898.jpg

we continue into the Diois ranges..

ss20899.jpg

,,arriving at la Motte Chalancon, with its wonderful little altiport just in front of our left wing. I can tell you that landing and taking off from that field is quite a challenge in real life!

Just south of la Motte is Remuzat, with its colony of vultures, but I think we are too high to meet any of them today

ss20905.jpg

from here, we aim straight for the Mont Ventoux, which easily spotted from a large distance.

ss20907.jpg

we overfly Buis les Baronnies, my favorite town in this part of the woods..

ss20916.jpg

and we arrive at Mont Ventoux, the highest mountain of the region. That is not snow on the summit, but very light limestone, the Ventoux is another of those ancient coral reefs.

ss20919.jpg

here we turn toward the Rhone Valley and Caritat airbase

ss20925.jpg

this takes us past the Dentelles de Montmirail, another limestone massif, with the famous wine growing areas of Gigondas to the north, Vacqueyras to the west and Beaumes de Venise here visible in the south

ss20927.jpg

I need to lose quite a bit of altitude, so I take one more look at the Ventoux

before landing at Caritat

Parked with the Ventoux in the background.

I apologise for the number of pics...
