The USA rail system is such an antiquated joke in comparison...almost like some kind of Non-PC joke that politicians won't discuss in public.

I would agree if the statement is limited to US passenger rail operations.  Those are almost always owned/operated by some government authority and are, for the most part, abysmally bad.  That includes Amtrak, which, for all intents and purposes is a Federal operation, though they are "independent" of the government in the same sense the US Postal Service is independent. They run at a loss and are subsidized by large amounts of taxpayer money.

The remaining US freight railroads are, for the most part, reasonably well-run, safe and efficient - not perfect, but not bad.

Definitely was referring to passenger rail, national and city level...argh. Bay Area BART system is ...shudder...I have a friend who works in a position that affords a very good view of the maintenance, his advice is "friends don't let friends ride BART". :( I am surprised there haven't been any serious accidents on the system frankly.

I agree that freight rail is alive and well, and frankly bumps Amtrak off the rails if (ha) Amtrak is running late...Always, usually compounded by losing their "window" early in the routes due to late starts/slow loading/Some mechanical issue delaying scheduled departure Every time I have rode Amtrak. Which wasn't a huge problem for me because if I was in a hurry to get somewhere, as opposed to wanting to relax and enjoy a scenic view from the Observation Car, i would be flying...love riding the train frankly.

It looks like freight rolling stock is still pretty old stuff, or new versions of the same old designs, but freight doesn't care about pretty cars and speedy travel, so long as it is cheap to move.
