I'm out on the boat these days. Quite different from the good 'ol days. Now I have wifi fed into the boat in pretty much any harbour I visit (thanks to a long-range antenna).

I'm in Ganges harbour at the moment. I'm anchored about 300 ft from the main North/South water runway in Ganges. No oversleeping here. Harbour Air (http://www.harbourair.com/) start operations about 0730 and, so far this morning, there's been two turbo Otters and three Beavers in and out. God! I love the smell of JetA in the morning! Not to mention the sound of a R-985 P&W trying to break the sound barrier with its prop tips.

Harbour Air has been on a buying spree. They've collected pretty much all of the independent Beaver operators as well as a couple good sized corporate Beaver airlines like Baxter and Saltspring Air over the past few years. Now, any time you see a Beaver, Turbo Otter, or a Twotter, it's more than likely a Harbour Air aircraft. There is a fair sized US airline out of Seattle called Kenmore Air and a few of them can be seen in these islands, too.

Talk about the good life.:) Glad to hear you have a better wifi system, you're in one of the prettiest spots in the world and get to see active aircraft every day.:cloudnine:

What do all these little companies think about being bought up? Imagine that option in AH2.:D

Sounds idyllic, my situation is similar except I'm not directly off of a Runway... I'm along a popular flight path however and get to see aircraft all day long... If I were not down below so often playing air hauler. :)

Sounds like a good life to be having.. but noisey too I can imagine...

Yeah, but there's noise (barking dog, lawnmower, power washer, chainsaw) and then there's noise (any airplane). I really don't mind the R985 (or PT6a in Beta range) alarm clock.

Sounds idyllic!  You should post some photos.

Thanks JG - I tried, right now I'm in the throes of updating (or trying to, anyway) my Cyanogen phone because every picture it takes is blurred.

OnePlus One - solution to the problem: take it to your nearest OnePlus service centre. You guessed it - nearest is Mississauga, Ontario (near Toronto - about 3000 miles away). Their next best suggestion: Bangladore, India.

My solution - out basket!

I'll dig around - there's a point-and-shoot camera somewhere on this boat. haven't seen it in a couple years. Bet it needs charging.

Anyway, local time is 1400, major air ops will resume late this afternoon. I've missed the lunch crowd, but my count was three Otters, three Bevers, and one 152 on floats, no less. That one had no Harbour Air markings. ;)

Hopefully, this works out - Beaver operations, taxi in and takeoff approx 1351 to 1506, Monday, June 27

Saltspringafternoon1.jpg

At 1506, two of them taxied out and took off (almost simultaneously). Sorry about the mickey-mouse picture - I was using a little point-and-shoot that is fine for relatively close up but suffers a bit at a distance. I had to estimate where the aircraft were and almost got it.

Here it is:

Saltspringafternoon2.jpg

You can see AXI in one of the previous shots - passed about 50 feet from my bow and put the hammer down. Too bad, but the little camera focused on the boat's shrouds and halyards which were between the plane and the camera so I got some great closeups of some 1X19 SS cable and a bit of 1/2" yacht braid - and a real fuzzy picture of a lot of prop spray.

While I'm writing this (1736) GOLC landed. Can't have gone far - took off at 1457 - probably picked up some in Victoria and is doing the loop back to Vancouver. If that's the case, he'll be out of here in about five to ten minutes. Otherwise, that's his last flight of the day and he'll be parked at the dock, here in Ganges.

I haven't seen any of the Turbo Otters this afternoon, but I'll be sure to take photos if they turn up.

Toronto I have visited.  The same applies to Bangalore, India.  However Mississauga is another thing. I may have been to it without knowing it as I have driven from Toronto to Niagara and back again. It seems to be next to Pearson international, and I have been there more than once.

Speaking of the popular flight path that I live under...the Goodyear blimp just overflew my boat...god what a racket. Sounded like two Islanders slung under a gas bag.
:D

Never seen it so low before, or heard it ever. If you are a blimp pilot...condolences to your hearing. :(

I've always wanted to go for a balloon ride. They're the ones drifting around, drinking Champagne breakfasts. Never quite got the weather and the opportunity to line up. One day, I hope.

I realise the Goodyear Blimp is not a balloon.

Not to bad for a snap and shoot, thanks for posting them up.:thum: Nice to see those Beaver's in action, not only looking good but still up and running while working hard after all these years.:)

A hot air balloon ride has always been on my bucketlist, I almost got my wife to agree to it when she saw a news blurb of a balloon crashing into a massive power line, dumping the passenger out and burning the one that stayed in. Plans shelved.:(

How does SWMBO like all the nearby aircraft traffic in the early hours?

John

I think it's great - wakes her up and she makes the coffee. So far, today, 1033hr, four in and four out (FZZY) is motoring past the starboard rail right now heading for a takeoff. All Beavers, though. I guess the Otters are used on the weekends when things get real busy
