Leg 27 (Whitehorse-Calgary) Part A: Whitehorse - Ft Nelson

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

This is Part A, the first of four topics of my journey from Whitehorse - Calgary. Rather than a direct route, I went via Ft Nelson, Grand Prairie and Edmonton City Centre too. Took me all day but it was worth it - great fun. The aircraft is the amazing Aeroworx B200

Enjoy, don't forget to check out B, C and D too

C-FGFZ parked on the corporate ramp at Whitehorse. I was going to use the B732 for this one, but it burst a tire on landing at Whitehorse and spares are short in the Yukon. We're waiting for a new tire to be FedEx-ed in.

Engine no. 1 started and just about to start no. 2 as we push back. You have to be fast with starting this plane because the battery really does run flat!

fsscr007.jpg

We're off. The B200 is quite awkward to taxi, even if I don't touch the throttle it tends to shoot off up to 20 KIAS or more  . Putting the condition down to Low Idle and giving the brakes plenty of excercise helped though.

Lined up, and completing the final checks before taking off on our little adventure.

We're off. It's so hard to get a rotation shot in this aircraft, as soon as you touch the stick you're up and away. But I love this angle at Whitehorse.

One of my favourite shots of the whole journey, this. We pass a small village as we dodge the mountains.

fsscr013.jpg

Cruising at just 9000ft. I wanted to do a bit of sightseeing on this trip. We have a nice IFR flightplan ready but I didn't want to use it unless the weather closes in.

fsscr014.jpg

Some of Northern Canada's beautiful scenery. Having said that, I wouldn't want to have to ditch out here - airfields and even tiny strips are few and far between.

fsscr015.jpg

Approaching some clouds...

fsscr017.jpg

...so I climbed up to 15,000ft to avoid them.

fsscr018.jpg

Nice job Ground Environment. As always. I have to say that a mixture of FE, GE and FSGlobal made for some stunning scenery.

fsscr019.jpg

Clouds are getting thicker below us now but we can see most of the ground, so no harm done to our VFR flightplan.

fsscr020.jpg

Some very low cloud around here, must be nasty on the ground inside them.

fsscr021.jpg

The scenery was starting to get pretty dull, but...

fsscr022.jpg

I had cunningly inserted a few waypoints in the flightplan that would take us through this beautiful valley. Muhahaha!

fsscr026.jpg

One uneventful descent later, we're on approach to Ft Nelson. This is our second attempt; I normally hate missed approaches but the B200 makes them a joy to fly.

fsscr027.jpg

Over the numbers...err...number. My landings in this plane are still dodgy at best, it gets pretty hard to handle on approach.

fsscr028.jpg

Slowing down on the active.

fsscr029.jpg

We open the door to meet the guys at the FBO here and buy half a ton of fuel for the next leg. Flight time for this leg was 1hr 38mins.

fsscr030.jpg

That's the end of Part A guys. The leg continues with the hop from Ft Nelson to Grand Prairie in Part B.

Cheers

Dave :-)

Very well done, Dave.

Though I don't have any first-hand experience with it, I remember reading an article that said taxiing real-world turboprops

involves going in and out of beta range to control ground speed, saving wear and tear on the brakes.

Anyway, that was a very entertaining posting. Going to look at the rest now.
