SEATAC 400
Here's a couple of photo's I took at the Wings over Miami Air Museum last year, for all of you Catalina lovers out there. The dude at the museum tells me it's in flyable condition!

mutley 4,498
Great shot! I took this at Shoreham airshow in 2007, it even had a 5% share up for sale! I should have taken more
SEATAC 400
Cool shot. You always wish that you took more Mutley. I took 164 photos at the air show and I still wish I had taken more.
allardjd 1,853
More Catalina shots... This one is at the Fantasy of Flight museum (FAO8) in Polk City FL and is flyable. These two photos are a mystery Cat. I saw this AC and took these photos at an airport not far from KSC in about 1988, probalby KTIX, but not sure. Can't ID the AC. It's definitely a Catalina but appears to be a one-of-a-kind conversion. The registration number does not appear in the FAA registration database at this time, so whatever it is, where ever it is, it no longer carries that registration. SEATAC 400
Wow! A four engine catalina. never saw one of those
allardjd 1,853
I'm guessing it was unique. I've done a lot of searching and have never found any record of one. John
stu7708 244
I'm guessing it was unique. I've done a lot of searching and have never found any record of one. John Did a little Googleing and the first hit on "catalina with four engines" was this. Either it's the same plane you got there with a new paintjob, or someone else did the same thing... All other hits on google where boat related.....
allardjd 1,853
Wow, nice piece of detective work. Mystery solved. I had searched everything I could think of and drew a blank. The one I saw is certainly a Catalina converted under the same STC if not the exact same AC years later. I saw it in 1988 and the article you linked was from 1973. If you look closely at my photos, the thing was looking kind of ratty and down-in-the-mouth, but seemed airworthy. Dirty still flies. I had originally taken those extra engines to be turboprops but later decided that they must be conventional piston engines, based mainly on the exhaust plumbing. That proved correct. Thanks for a great link. Loved it! John
wisemanp 0
Amazing looking thing really...Why don't they make them that ugly these day?
SEATAC 400
Amazing looking thing really...Why don't they make them that ugly these day? Ugly? Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. I've always found the Cat to be a rather nice looking plane, errr, flying boat. If you want ugly, i nominate the Britten-Norman Trislander. rob16584 42
Great article! I think the opening few lines sum it up perfectly one of those scientific renaissance men we hear so much about but never meet
mutley 4,498
If you want ugly, I nominate the Britten-Norman Trislander What? Ugly? What's not to like about G-JOEY with his red nose and smiley little face? A regular visitor to Mutley Field Sadly JOEY doesn't have this livery any more. Cheers
allardjd 1,853
It increases the lift coefficient - the Earth repels it. John EDIT: Interesting - I just noticed that the wing-mounted engines have 3-blade props and the center engine has a two-blade prop. It probably has something to do with the strength of the vertical stabilizer attachments. JDA
