It was named after the wife, Marjorie McConnell, of the first pilot that it was assigned to, Lt. Cecil McConnel. Margie was home to several other crews and continued flying until the end of the war. She flew back to the US in late 1945, to be scrapped at Kingman, Arizona.

If you look at the original pic of the captured wulfe hound, you see that it has retained its original serial and camo on the tail, so I don't think they overpainted the upper surfaces. Besides, od weathers to grey, so again I think it was kept od on top.

To my eye, that odd scrap piece IS olive drab... where it was longest in the dirt from the looks of it.

Welcome to the forums here Nicola, :welcomeani: it's always fun to figure things out. From what I have seen from the past Jan Kees only paints what he finds in photographs so I'm pretty sure there is one somewhere around that he copied his paint from. Who knows, it could have been repainted a couple of times too. Would you happen to have any pic's of the full aircraft for us to check out.:)

B-17G 42-31369 of the 401st BG/614th BS IW-K "Round Tripper" was on a mission to Berlin on the 6th of august 1944, when it was hit by flak. The crew, led by Lt John Sauerwald, attempted to reach neutral ground in Sweden, but had to ditch in the Baltic Sea. All crew members managed to escape in dinghies, but where then captured by an U-boat, spending the rest of the war as POW's.
