jankees 917 Posted June 27, 2014 Author Report Share Posted June 27, 2014 done as requested by the son of one of her former pilots: MargieB-17G-85-BO 43-38379 OR-O "Margie", which was assigned to the 323rd BS/ 91st BG, based in Bassingbourn, UK, on the 10th of september 1944. It was named after the wife, Marjorie McConnell, of the first pilot that it was assigned to, Lt. Cecil McConnel. Margie was home to several other crews and continued flying until the end of the war. It seems it may have been painted grey & yellow by the Germans, not the olive drab & yellow. From what I have seen from the past Jan Kees only paints what he finds in photographs so I'm pretty sure there is one somewhere around that he copied his paint from. It flew 50 missions and was named by its first pilot, Lt Frank Calicura, from Martinez, Cal. jankees 917 Posted February 19, 2017 Author Report Share Posted February 19, 2017 B-17G 42-31369 of the 401st BG/614th BS IW-K "Round Tripper" was on a mission to Berlin on the 6th of august 1944, when it was hit by flak. The crew, led by Lt John Sauerwald, attempted to reach neutral ground in Sweden, but had to ditch in the Baltic Sea. All crew members managed to escape in dinghies, but where then captured by an U-boat, spending the rest of the war as POW's. Link to post Share on other sites
