Wing struts above the wing have to be big - they're in compression rather than tension and have to be beefy enough to not buckle. Wings struts below the wing are in tension and the load-bearing elemen

But can it lay an egg?   I've seen photos of that one before but don't know what it is or where it's based.  Such poor taste in flying objects is more commonly seen in the hot air balloon ge

Alan,

I will challenge you slightly on the "transaero" and offer Ca.60 'Noviplano'.

Cheers

Andrew

My scource doesnt give that name , but it does list the name by which it became best known as Capronisimo. Transaereo was it's official name. The aircraft was basicly a 100 seater Houseboat fitted with what were believed to be the wings from 3 CA-42 Bombers. It was powered by 8 Liberty V12s. Rumour has it that the pilot deliberatley crashed the aircraft to prevent it being used to try and fly the atlantic. Caproni wanted to rebuild it but a mysterious fire burnt the salvaged remains.

No need to settle it John.  Further research would indicate the Ca.60 Noviplano is the Caproni designation and the Transaero seems to be an common English reference.

But splitting hairs is like splitting the infintive.....it's so much fun.

Cheers

I'm stumped - it's very roughly reminiscent of the Boeing Type 15 in some ways but the mystery plane appears to be much larger.

Also, I can't get a remote match of landing gear, cockpit or cowling on any aircraft by any manufacturer. Being an obviously military type and only built in prototype, probably very few photos exist and most that do are probably "company" photos.
