Wing struts above the wing have to be big - they're in compression rather than tension and have to be beefy enough to not buckle. Wings struts below the wing are in tension and the load-bearing elemen

But can it lay an egg?   I've seen photos of that one before but don't know what it is or where it's based.  Such poor taste in flying objects is more commonly seen in the hot air balloon ge

What a cock up.

I have to exclaim that it's an extremely well executed example of and experimental aircraft and I'm sure all the ex-employees who helped build it and the ex-pilots who flew it consider it an a fine example of the extremely good and exemplary work that ex-manufacturer could execute.

Haha, you guys. :D

I do not have an encyclopedic knowledge of aircraft either. The hints given help a lot as does Wikipedia. What I do is pick out certain points or aspects of the aircraft and just do a search on them. This will lead me to other hints about the nomenclature of the aircraft. As I go along I look up aircraft images that have these parts and ta da X marks the spot. I have spent a couple of hours on and off and as little as ten minutes searching so it can be hit or miss. I figured this was a good way to increase my knowledge about aviation too.

@ Alan - It could and did go supersonic, but not in level flight as originally intended.  It ended up being built with much smaller engines than originally intended and couldn't cut the mustard with them.  That's an old story with a lot of military AC, particularly in the WWII era.

Are we still ettit then? no one named it yet?

Alan,

What do you mean, no one named it yet!  I think five of us have all named it, short of the manufacturer and designation, we just haven't been explicit.  :P

Cheers

OK guys have a go at this one,  This pic is from FS but there are dozens of photos of real ones on the net...if you know what it is of course! This is an early production aircraft and has a very distinctive feature. Later versions have lost that feature but have something even more distinctive! Guess away....
