IcedUpPitotTube 0
Back from a LONG hiatus... but Ilyushin Il-96, Alan? I believe that's the Aeroflot one that caught fire on June 4th, 2014. Registration RA-96010. If I'm right, go ahead and submit another picture, Alan; I don't feel like cooking something tricky up right now.
dodgy-alan 1,587
It is indeed an IL96. Such a shame as these are lovely looking aircraft,
dodgy-alan 1,587
OK try this one then, you may sort of recognise it, but this version had another name as well.

J G 927
Hmmm looks a bit VC10 ish. But as it is a drawing, perhaps it is a flight of fancy?
dodgy-alan 1,587
It was a proposal that got squashed, this is an artists impression of what it would have looked like.

allardjd 1,853
I think maybe you mean the other Vickers, John. I'm not sure the Archbishop would approve. John
brett 2,310
I think I would prefer my nuclear weapons safely tucked into a bomb bay. Real looking aircraft, a shame it never got to fly.
allardjd 1,853
The B-58 Hustler carried it's weapons in an external pod. I think some of the B-52 external stand-off weapons were nuclear capable too. John
dodgy-alan 1,587
The base aircraft was familiar, but this version had a peculiar name which I have yet to discover what it meant.
brett 2,310
Is it the Vickers VC10 Poffler? Odd name, but I found a quote here that kind of explaines the name; "There's was a fair bit of conjecture as to what name it it have been given, (the name Poffler was used but as usual this was thought to be a typically obscure project code name to throw any would be spies off the scent!), and after a bit of searching it appears that the name Vigilant would have been quite likely as it continued the 'V' theme of the other V-Bombers in service" Only an interesting tidbit if I'm right. Same aircraft that John guessed at, it just went through a few different names.
dodgy-alan 1,587
Well done Brett, it is indeed the VC-10 Poffler, they were one of a number of VC-10 deritives proposed including AEW, Skybolt Carrier, Maritime Patrol etc, all came to nothing due the bloody stupid British Government. brett 2,310
I will give this one to John, I googled his answer and it was in the first article I read on it. Nice work John, I looked for awhile and didn't find it until you posted.

Quickmarch 488
I'm away on the boat - so uncertain internet connections. With Alan's clue and the patently obvious assumption that this thing never got off the water, a search for "failed Italian Aircraft" (or Flying Boats) will yield the answer. Someone else take this one, please. Edit: Sorry, it evidently did get off for a short flight - just didn't get back on back on in one piece.
