Sabre 28
Happened upon this cloud layer shortly after taking off from Darrington. I could have stayed up there all day :cloudnine: :cloudnine:

Sabre 28
It was part of an Air Hauler delivery 1S2 Darrington Municipal to KGRF Gray AAF Ft Lewis decided to take the direct route past Jumbo Mountain then between Big Bear Mountain and Liberty Mountain (got to love those names haven't you). Defintely not VFR I couldn't see a thing on the ground low cloud and snowing heavily. I really should have gone west along the valley following the Arlington-Darrington road Mind I'd have missed these lovely views as I popped from under the clouds after passing Big Bear. I've no idea what the real life protocol would have been but it was great fun

TedG 0
Lovely images! This time of year is a bit tough on getting true VFR flights in that region with the weather.
UKJim 502
Lovely images! This time of year is a bit tough on getting true VFR flights in that region with the weather. I performed a VFR flight from concrete muni to Darrington - couldnt see a thing hehe - stayed about 1500 feet; only worked because I know the area well. If I didnt then I would have ended up on the side of a mountain

remingtonbox 18
I've no idea what the real life protocol would have been but it was great fun What was the ceiling on the ground when you took off? That may have changed the whole flight if you would have flown it RW...
brett 2,315
Nice shots. I fly with real world weather all the time out of Concrete and find that layer there alot. Most times it is clear underneath. Even using the GPS it can be a bit nerve racking when decending down through the soup in those mountainous regions. Sometime you forget to breathe untill you come back out under the layer. Forget about when there is no visibility, wouldn't want that in RW situations. Just hope you have enough fuel to find another airport nearby that is abit better off I guess. I know in FSX that ATC will not let you land when visiability is like that but what about the airports that do not have a tower, are you allowed to land even though you really shouldn't? Do they come find you and take your license away?
dodgy-alan 1,587
Nicely done, the thing about that stuff is that you can very easily become disorientated, especially if you're running VFR. It's a bugger to let down through as well, I left the mangled remains of a C47 in the side of mountain in PNG due to that very reason when approaching a jungle airstrip. brett 2,315
It's funny, we have a tendency to look at our gauges too much when flying the sim compared to RW pilots but when we can't see outside we forget to rely on the gauges and panic sets in. Wish we had a radio altimiter in some of the smaller GA type aircraft. When room allows, I have added it to some of my bush planes for those nasty foul weather flights. I have even added the altitude callout gauge to some when there is no room on the dash.
