Leg 86: Luqa Malta Intl (LMML) to Aguenar Tamamrasset (DAAT)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have been looking forward to this post for a long time now, as it is my first leg for the Mutley's ATWC :-). After Panos's great leg 85, it's now my turn! Leg 86 is from the beautiful mediterranean island of Malta all the way across Algerian Desert to Tamamrasset. The flight was on the whole very successful, apart from one hazard that occured; the baton was left on the seat of the cockpit while I went to the toilet and it must have rolled off the seat and under the controls, I was looking for a good 5 - 10minutes before I found it, we must keep that baton safe!

Anyway, on with the flight, I was expecting it to be nice weather in Malta (a little change from the UK) but I was suprised to see a lot of cloud when I arrived on a GB Airways A320. I thought I would start by showing you a map of the Airport from above (for those of you who might be unfamiliar with Malta.)

Preparing for departure to DAAT, engines switched off and waiting for the Flight attendant to arrive with the Baton.

A little late pushback, ATC have given us permission to taxi to the active. A GB Airways is cleared for takeoff, looks like we're gonna have to hold.

As we taxi round the corner the GB Airways gets airbourne, but a Lufthansa A321 is cleared to land! Just typical, the only time I'm in a hurry!

Finally we're cleared for takeoff. Rotating.

Flying past the "busy" terminal. A Malta A319 prepares for departure to Glasgow.

Gear up and looking back over the airport.

fsscr007.png

Passing Malta's Harbour at 3000ft, it would be better if we had nicer weather to see it.

The wings are levelled for the cruise, and I sit back and relax for a few hours of sea and desert. :mrhappy:

Cruising now over the mediterranean at FL200.

fsscr010.png

Cruising over the Algerian desert, only another 90 miles to go!

fsscr011.png

We are cleared for the approach and switching to the tower, shame I can't speak Algerian. Aha! My flight attendant to the rescue!

fsscr012.png

Gear down and making the final adjustments.

We settle down nicely on the long runway as a trainee stunt pilot practices fly-bys in an Embraer 120.

Parked up on the sand in the "parking area". A local artist offers to paint the aircraft as a mark of ATWC leg 86. He even signed it :yikes:

Well this is where my leg comes to an end. I apologise for the short amount of shots, as there wasn't really much of interest apart from plenty of sand! The only thing that is concerning me now is how I am going to get home from here. Perhaps reef will be generous enough to give me a lift to Khartoum in Leg 87, where I will hopefully be able to get a plane back to London :-) or maybe I could just walk

I hope you enjoyed the Leg 87, and I hope to take part in another leg soon!

Best Regards,

Tap

:good

Tap,

Welcome to the ATWC Pilot team. Great job. I enjoyed the shots and commentary. Be careful with that baton. That last edited one was very nice. Hope to see more of your work in the European legs.

John
