The Charpy V-notch testing of specimens from the raised fragment of the original Titanic revealed that the nil ductility temperature of the steel was higher than the water temperature. Smith was married to my great aunt, i am reliably informed of this by my grandfather who has a seat in his name in Lichfield cathederal, nearbye in a small park is a statue to captain smith and as a youngster was always told this story , I have in my possesion all the birth certificates etc from that side of the family back to before 1830 so it should be quite easy to get a family tree showing their positions on it. I agree with you, todays ships are just floating hotels attached to computers. sure they may be safer and ultra modern, but they are Soulless! If you look at pics of the older liners they are so much more gracefull, One of the reasons for this is the hull design, Older ships have a beautiful curving sheerline (this is the main deck level that goes from stem to stern, veiwed from just off the bow or stern you can see it has a distinct curve downwards towards the centre of the ship.)This Sheerline dictated as to how the rest of the accomodation blocks above would look. Most modern cruisers are dead flat hence their apartment block appearance. Ships of the early 20th century right up until the late 60s were simply far more aestheticlly pleasing with absolute attention to detail, (given the technology available). After the Titanic disaster new regulations made the newer ships a lot safer, especially when it came to watertight compartments and lifeboats etc. Probably the most famous of these pre-war liners is the Queen Mary still moored at Long Beach. Ships like the Canberra and the QE2 were late 60s designs and were transitional designs between the early ships and the new package holiday look of todays vessels, the Biggest of these ships was the SS France, later to become the Norway. I think the idea of a new Titanic is a fantastic idea. It first came to light a few years ago but never went beyond the idea stage. If this ship actually gets built she will become the most famous ship in the world, No question! No doubt tickets would be in the upper end of the market but that's as it should be. Titanic was never a holiday cruise ship. She was a fast passenger transport and therefore would not attract all the usual tourist crowds. I look forward to seeing this ship enter the water. Never had the urge to go on a cruise although I have been asked a few times. There are plenty of other places I would rather go for a vacation to visit and they do not include floating cities. You'll never be able to get enough people to sustain a cruise ship without modern conveniences. The TItanic was designed for the trans-Atlantic paaenger service. That market no longer exists. The replica is cool and nostalgic, but you can't run a cruise line on nostalgia alone. Today's crowd want rock climbing walls and putting greens and casinos and floating shopping malls. I prefer a sliding glass door and a balcony rather than a porthole. I'm a maritime buff and a railroad buff, in addition to being plane nuts, but having been on a number of cruises on the floating hotels, I kind of like them. As ships, they are only moderately interesting (function over form), but it's a great hotel with great food, service and entertainment, with the advantage that it moves from port to port - hotels don't do so all that much. It's not as if the new Titanic is going to be a steamer - diesels, probably diesel electric, just like the floating hotels. The whole Titanic saga is a thoroughly fascinating piece of history, however. I agree with Seatac - the replica will probably never be built anyway. This guy's accountants (or his heir's accountants) will bring him to his senses sooner or later. If he seeks additonal investors he'll have a hard time finding many. My 10p worth Glen I did think that odd Glen, but without getting overly political our country (UK) seems to be heading back to that route anyway as regards have and have nots I think the guy might be going a bit too far with nostalgic realism! Someone in this thread mentioned that this guy has a bit of a reputation for grand idea's that never come to fruition and I've heard that too, but apparently there is going to be a big announcement on Monday regarding this project, would be nice to see this dream come true ... if it does I can see Internet access being allowed and probably losing the class thing too, if not I'll be doing a Jack Dawson and be on the look out for First Class down to earth Lady's like Kate Winslet with rich snooty husbands and at the same time keeping an eye out for icebergs so that I can actually make it from A to B Link to post Share on other sites
M31 0 Posted March 2, 2013 Author Report Share Posted March 2, 2013 Looks like this is going to be a reality, heard on Radio Scotland about this yesterday that ticket allocation is way over subscribed and first class tickets will be about 1 million GBP, Kennedy family have booked cabins apparently! Also a guy on another forum I frequent was at the press launch today ... well i've just come back from the press launch at the Ritz in London. the rudder is a dummy. under that are three four bladed 360' pods. two bow thrusters. one extra deck than the old ship. called the safety deck. with two rows of Atlantic lifeboats holding over 200 in each. there will be three classes, no computer or wifi for passengers. the sat domes and radar are in the first two funnels as are public viewing decks. they are about to sign the contract for work to start.now who wants a ticket?
