Here's an interesting story - Leonard Cheshre, the C.O. of 617 Squadron, had a brother in the RAF who was shot down and captured in late 1943. When he found out that his brother was a prisoner at Stalag Luft III (yes, the 'Great Escape' prison camp), he planned a surpise 'drop' of chocolates, chickens, hams and plum puddings, to brighten up the POWs' Christmas. Cheshire had 3 Lancasters painted white with red crosses, to avoid enemy action and, with Martin and Shannon (of CHastise fame) practised low-level flying during the weeks before the 'raid'. Here they are, on Christmas Morning 1943, approaching Stalag Luft III (about 200 miles south east of Berlin):

Pretty amazing story - described in several bio's of 617 and Cheshire - would have been great to witness, eh?!? :thum:

Cheers - Dai.
