Best antivirus program for a FS PC?

Recommended Posts

I have come to a stage where I need to renew my AV subscription, in the past, I have been using NOD32 and have been quite pleased.

My new PC came with a trial for Bullguard who claim to be the least resource intensive.

What would be your recommendation, what do you use for your FS PC?  :anyone:

Cheers,\Joe

Hi Joe!

Not sure whether I could recommend my choice against the competition, since I look on AV (*and* a decent firewall, so "Internet Security") as merely tediously necessary.

But anyway, I've been using AVG IS for the last year or three, and for me it has been a pretty civilised experience.

All I'd say is that if you are thinking of changing to AVG, don't for heaven's sake buy it online on their website! By going onto Amazon I got the same package for three PCs for two years at a cheaper price than they would have charged me for a single PC for one year. And no, I don't understand that, either.

But there again, if it ain't bust, do you really want to fix it?   ;)

Cheers,

Bruce

Hi James,

I have used MSE in the past and I thought it was OK until it let though a nasty trojan that I could not get rid of and had to re-install Windows.

Once bitten twice shy!! That's what put me onto NOD32.

@Bruce.  You may be right about if it ain't broke.. it's just that Bullguard came recommended from the PC supplier.

This is a very divisive subject, because I am sure most people will swear their product is the best.

I will add my tuppence by offering Norton 360 .

I have been using norton for around 15 years  and have to say I cannot fault it. Before using it I tried avast , kasperski, mccafee (which was rubbish) and a few free ones, and with all of them I managed to suffer from viruses, ok malware wasnt created back then, but i cannot fault norton, yes it isnt cheap , but the best never is. In the old days I am told it slowed the computer, but in fairness I never had any truck with it, and now it is fit and forget.

@BF,  thanks Nigel, I remember you mentioning Norton before.

My only experience with Norton was trying to loosen its stranglehold on the Mother in Law's laptop. It would try an analyse everything, set up I suppose, I have steered well clear ever since.

As you suggest, it is a very divisive subject!

+1 for the free Microsoft Security Essentials.  I used paid MacAfee for several years and had a cheap streak when the subscription ran out.  I decided to try the free MSE and now have it on five PCs (2 desktops, 2 laptops, 1 Netbook) and have had no problems.  YMMV.

Not claiming it's better than all others, but who more than MS has a vested interest in their Operating Systems not be hacked?  It seems to me that being who they are and what's being protected, they are going to work hard at making it work.  Also, the price is pretty attractive.

"The best of the best" - ZONE ALARM. It's not just a very good antivirus, it also has a very powerful firewall. And it's free. And the differences between this free version and the paid one are dealing with convenience, not with security....just check that table.

I used AVG in the past before it started becoming a resource hog a few years back. Prior to that it was Norton but that went the same way as AVG and was very invasive (in my experience anyway). Now I use MSE and its been solid for the past 3 years. I heard some time back that the majority of antivirus software all use the same set of virus definitions anyway. Not sure how true that is.

I once heard a very smart guy remark, "Who has the most interest in you not being troubled by viruses, the guy who sells you anti-virus software, or the guy who sells you your operating system and GIVES you anti-virus software to protect it?" That sure makes good sense to me. MSE seems to get the job done for me.

I use MS Security essentials and have no problems with it.  Its free and it has MS's reputation riding on it so it has to be good.

........ I just realized what I said.... :th_blush:  ... I'll get my coat.......
