I guess you have had a bad experience.

I have to admit I wouldn't buy any of their gear, but I would recommend FS Repaint for someone who wants an easy solution to create new liveries,

John,

Having spent many hours trying to get to grips with Gmax (provided free with some versions of MSFS), without any meaningful results, I turned to FS Design Studio and did find its documentation & my learning curve much better, but ironically having made some basic models, the experience showed where I was going wrong with Gmax.

Soon I was making far more advanced Gmax models, albeit in fs2004 format but Arno Gerretsen's freeware ModelConverterX does work a treat in converting the model to FSX format, although it took me some time to figure out how to restore the subsequent scrambled GUID # back to its original (not a problem if creating a new FSX model where the GUID # is not critical).

But if very complex models & complex animations are not required then FS Design Studio does work well & like any tool perhaps it has a lot of  hidden potential that I did not discover.

Ray.

Abacus were one of the good developers many years ago, but have since been superceded by many other developers who have simply produced far better models. As the others have said, they still offer some reasonable add-ons like FS Design Studio and FS Repaint. The Flight Deck series was always popular, and Flight Deck 6 is not too bad still. There are better carrier add-ons you can get, but Flight Deck 6 packages them all together in an easy-to-install bundle that suits those less technically-minded simmers.

Remember that most of those Abacus add-ons are getting on 8+ years old now.

I am not sure I like the Idea the we have a topic that slags off a single producer, although, to be honest I would think twice before buying any of their products myself.

I would rather see a topic that has a wider net so that members of this illustrious site can warn others of add-on munters from any vendor.

Just my tuppence worth.

I totally agree that it feels very strange to single out a specific developer in a forum topic John.

And since I don't own any of their products I can't say anything specific about the products from Abacus, although they don't look like they live up to the standards of some other developers. On the other hand it looks like they still support FS9 with most of what they sell, so I guess there are some compromises that need to be done to manage that...

And as Dean pointed out most of the stuff on sale have been around for a fairly long time with many added to the store back in 2009.

I have to agree with John and Mickie, I'm not sure I like this post at all. Whist it's true that Abacus no longer offer the same top quality stuff they did in the past, creating this thread to rubbish the whole company is a bit off. The language you've used is a bit rough ("look at the lies") and in truth this just looks like a full on attack for no reason.

As others have said, abacus still offer a few good products and I'd go so far as to say that for the kind of simmer who just wants to have a basic to medium level aircraft that doesn't have a huge study manual to read before you can get the engines running. Don't forget, as simmers, we're not all the same.

OK so how do I delete my account?

Don't take it hard mate. :D   We all have been new to this forum at one time or another, its hard not to put a foot wrong when you are still finding your way around.  This really is the best FS site on the web, take your time, get to know everybody here and settle in. You will find no better bunch of FS nuts anywhere else.  :thum:

So from my part, my post was not directed at you personally. I think we all know what Abacus is like, I think it is just a question of how we say it! ;)

No need to delete your account theeaviationist, the subject title was bound to invite some contrary replies so I have taken out the section that was in brackets! We do like an active debate but not a blinkered one so you should respect the views of others.

From what I have read so far we are all pretty much of the same opinion, their aircraft products are old and tired but they have produced some reasonable utilities.

Cheers,

Joe

When I started out in flight sim, I got a few Abacus products and really enjoyed them (the A380 and 787 in particular). However, as I grew in experience and wanted to do more in the aircraft (such as procedures and checklists), I moved on to stuff like PMDG and iFly. They are a good solid starting point to build up to in my opinion. Now I wouldn't go back to them, but when you first start and you don't really know where to put aircraft models, textures, sounds, effects and panels or not confident to do so (CamSim 787 as an example), then yes, the Abacus stuff is fine.

At the end of the day, it's what you want

Good point Chuck, as we progress in our experience we become more choosey.

My only concern is that they are really still charging top dollar for old software...

Back when I first started out with MSFS ( FS 98, it was ), I bought Abacus' Co-Pilot flight planner, and used it to fly across the US from Florida to California, then up the Pacific coast to Vancouver. It was, ( and probably still is ) a very good piece of software, and got me away from merely doing circuits around Miami. If I didn't have Plan G, I'd probably buy the latest version. On the downside, I bought Abacus Flight Deck shortly afterwards; a collection of USN carrier-borne aircraft. While the external models seemed good enough, the interiors were less than stellar. For example, the solitary fuel gauge in the Grumman F9F Panther looked like it had been taken off a moped.

The only Abacus product I have now is FS Repaint, which is okay-ish, except when it refuses to load certain models and textures for no apparent reason.

I guess my not liking as much of abacus is due to my first add-on being the PMDG 747-400X. That might explain why.

I'd say most other developers would be a step or two down from your starting point in that case  ;)
