In case you didn't know it, today is International Left Handers Day. Among famous/infamous left handers are; Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Babe Ruth, Napoleon Bonaparte, Leonardo da Vinci, Marie Curie, Aristotle, Ned Flanders, Jimi Hendrix and me.

Now you right handers have names for us, Kack handed, southpaws etc. We are a minority but apparently not as convicted murderers, the majority of which are left handed.

The odd thing is there are a couple of things I cannot do with my left hand. (yes I know what you're thinking ). I can't use scissors or a mouse with my left hand, it's impossible.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Any other southpaws out there? :thum: <Notice the left handed thumbs up. :D

'Lefties' seem to have been forgotten recently... even us 'righties' are ignored at times. As a 'righty' try cutting your right-hand finger nails with a pair of scissors - you need to make a conscious effort to keep the blades together to be effective due to the 'play' in the blades. This play of the blades is nullified by the force between the thumb & finger when used in the right-hand forcing the cutting blades together.

Curiously, although right-handed (my dad was left handed & a bit of an anarchist, as so many lefties are), I am left footed in soccer/football) in accuracy & power of booting the ball & my left eye is dominant which is unfortunate as one of my hobbies is photography & all digital cameras with viewfinders are designed for r.h. dominant eyes, hence my nose gets in the way of the external lcd which eventually becomes covered in nose grease.

Out of interest, this week there was a mention of hockey-sticks being only right-handed & legal in the sport. Is this correct? Somewhere back in my mind, the left handed or right handed part tells me that this is not true!

Just some thoughts on the subject - don't know whether these thoughts come from the l.h. or r.h. side of my brain.

Ray.

Apparently we are ambidextrous until about four years old which is when I broke my right arm, being anarchic I jumped off the top of a playground slide. Since then I've been a leftie.

It sometimes has advantages, my colleague is a rightie and so, for example, when we put up plasterboard he works to the right of me so we don't tread on each others feet.

Thank heavens that I wasn't forced to write right handed though, there was a time when kids would get a cane across the back of the left hand if they used it.

I can hammer using both hands but other then that, my left hand might as well be a paw. :D  As to which side of my brain being used to write this, probably a small, nut sized part in the very back of my head. :wacko2:

Perhaps you have it back to front (or left to right), you've not been a leftie due to being anarchic at such a young age, but probably become feeling anarchic due to teachers or whoever trying to force you to be right-handed, despite not now feeling you were forced into it.

I've never heard of children being forced into being left-handed.

The main reason for teachers (here in the west) used to encourage us to be right-handed is that we write left to right, but in much of the World, people write right to left. Hopefully teachers & parents now let us go our own way.

So you are not a lefty by birth, just became one out of necessity? I suppose that would explain the need to mouse and scissor with the right hand.

I think Ted Bundy (not Al Bundy) was left handed also

Funny you say this, another of my hobbies is nature photography and I have the same problem ! I have to wipe often the back LCD when I want to control the pics I have taken !  :D

I'm still ambidextrous - at least when it comes to hand-eye co-ordination (like swinging a tennis racket). Both sides are equally inaccurate but the right is stronger.

I'm a Canadian, so am fully qualified to remark that hockey sticks (which have curved blades) come in two flavours. There was a time, and JA will probably remark that I'm old, when hockey sticks had straight blades, thus needing no designation as to handedness.

I just finished a book titled "Why Men Have Nipples". No, the whole book isn't on the subject, just one chapter. However, it appears that we (as fetuses) are all female until about the 4th month in production when men get smart and switch sides. Thus nipples on men are leftovers from this trip to the dark side.

Interestingly, this is about the same time we develop ears and start hearing Mom complain about low pay, long hours, no respect, or just about anything...and we take a chance on being selfish arsehats instead.
