mutley 4,495
Our very own Bruce (aka Brian747) has written a treatise on his recent experience of specifying and setting up his new flight sim PC. Grab a cup of coffee and click here to see how Bruce got on.
wain 879
A good read, nice and informative, thanks Brian... I have never seen such a tidy internal picture of a PC.....hope it all goes well and yes you sometimes have to wonder what happens in transit.. Wayne
hifly 925
Entertaining read as usual B/B. I went through a similar experience last year when I upgraded. I garnered the mid range specs and prices of specialist FSX builders showed it to our 'just around the corner' pc shop and they came in cheaper. As they'd built our previous pcs we trusted them and their support was excellent.ie same day turn-around when possible. It still chugs my modest FSX along merrily, no CTDs etc. I hope I'm not speaking too soon. In the meantime, hats off to Matt at Chillblast for supporting Mutley's.
Bruce (a.k.a. brian747) 142
Thank you, guys. I'm not entirely sure whether the saga is madly helpful to anyone, but I posted it as a simple account of what happened to me. (FWIW). I'm seriously annoyed about the USB3 thing, mostly because it was a very important factor for me when I specified the upgrade but hey - life's like that. 88-) > "In the meantime, hats off to Matt at Chillblast for supporting Mutley's..." I'll drink to that! Although it's important to bear in mind that sponsorship doesn't mean that we relinquish our independence, in reviews or anything else. Cheers and thanks, B. brett 2,310
Do not know much about computers but I did get a lot from your saga and appreciate you posting it. Thanks Brian. Best of luck with the new rig and hope it lasts a long time.
Bruce (a.k.a. brian747) 142
Many thanks for that, Brett! > "...hope it lasts a long time..." <grin> Me too. I don't throw 'em away, I wear 'em out. Cheers, B.
Captain Coffee 2,030
Very good read, very informative. Very scary seeing that Drop Damage...i'd be worried that kind of hit might eventually crop up a loose connection/solder joint someday...possibly harm a CD bearing or other internal damage...who knows? Sorry to get you paranoid I wish sensitive component suppliers would attach Gforce meters (they break and stain if the package is dropped hard) to verify if something was handled poorly (and encourage better package securing in transit...it could well have been a hard Braking incident on the road that caused your putter to fly off a truck shelf or something like that ) I had a local business upgrade my FSX machine instead of rebuilding it myself, the price was reasonable, and I have local face to face support if I need it ( I have needed it once). I have been tempted to build a dedicated machine from scratch, but suspect that I would also go with a premade machine. (..those chillblast machines DO look nice). But I am a few years away I hope from needing a new machine...gosh I hope at least that long. Thanks for documenting your experience.
Tim Harris 1
Good review, I'm putting together almost the same system, except with a 980ti, I'll be assembling it myself though I've always recommended if you get a shop to 'build one' then make sure you drive there to pick it up and carefully strap it into a seatbelt and drive home slowly those delivery guys like to play footy with them, or stick forklift prongs in em
hlminx 301
Great read Brian Very neatly built machine, and some very impressive operating stats ! Bit shocked by the drives being knocked so far out of place in transit .. (reminiscent of my last YODEL experience) As a homebuilder I can say it was a very worthwile challenge to do it myself, but as there are some pretty good suppliers that have narrowed considerably the cost benefit against a DIY machine, I might be swayed in the future. Touch wood it will be a long time till I have to make that call
allardjd 1,853
Great story, well told, Brian. I hope you'll keep us informed of what happens with the USB3 situation. Being able to back up to an external drive through a USB3 connection at a reasonable speed is a huge benefit and not getting it when you specifically opted for it has got to be half-past disappointing. Bruce (a.k.a. brian747) 142
Many thanks, guys. I wanted to just tell it "like it is". @ John > "...got to be half-past disappointing." Ohhhhh man, you have (I hope) no idea of the language I have used.... Cheers, B.
allardjd 1,853
Ohhhhh man, you have (I hope) no idea of the language I have used.... I have Navy and power plant in my background. I may not have heard it all but what I haven't heard wasn't worth hearing. John
Bruce (a.k.a. brian747) 142
With me it's police (in an extremely rough dockside slum area) and the RAF, so we're probably about equal in that area. Just as well for everyone else that the don't p**s (oops, sorry) us off. Cheers, B.
brett 2,310
I have been a truck driver, a roofer, two tours in the Marine Corps, twenty some years in the Carpenters Union and the worst I ever heard was from some old lady in the DMV before the cops hauled her off. Folks were rolling on the floor laughing at the combos she came out with.
allardjd 1,853
One of our plant managers was no piker. He introduced us to a new term we'd never heard before, a "Bring Your Own Hammer" meeting. It goes like this. He summons you to his office and tells you to bring your own hammer. When you arrive he has you put a certain part of your anatomy on his desk and then instructs you to pound on it with the hammer until he tells you that you can stop. The mere threat of it will bring tears to your eyes. John
Bruce (a.k.a. brian747) 142
Yup, I reckon that if we were to ever get together over a few pints, they'd have to put us in a distant room somewhere, where we couldn't offend the outraged sensibilities of those who have had less... er, *interesting* career choices. (Did I mention that I was also a child care officer in the red light district of Liverpool?). I reckon that we could swap a tale or two..... Cheers, B.
