Leg 39 - Beatty (KBTY) to Kidwell (IL4)

Recommended Posts

A note from the boss informs me that the courageous JG is back in the clinky after parading around the bar with the baton in his pocket singing “Ivor Biggun, pleased to meet you!”.

So after confirming on the county jail's website, I could free the baton…

…it’s time to sort this one out

OP: Hi, Nye County Jail, Sheriff Wehrly speaking.
Me: Good Afternoon. I understand you have one of our ATWC pilots John Aloysius Rupert Guest staying with you ..er..as a guest?
Sheriff: Ah yes, he’s in cell 11 sleeping off a night of debauchery, he’ll be up in front of the judge tomorrow.
Me: Has he still got a 14” long blue baton in his pocket?
Sheriff: No, we have confiscated it as evidence.
Me: OK, so can I pay bail on the baton and leave JG there?
Sheriff: Sure, bail is $500
Me: I’ll be right over.

So here I am at the Sheriff’s Office at 426 “C” Avenue. I can hear singing and wailing coming from the cells. “Which one is JG” I asked? “The one snoring like a foghorn” she replied. I handed over 10 crisp 50’s and left with the baton intact. I left some instructions for JG once he regained consciousness.

Whilst I'm waiting for the call to pick up the aircraft here are some details of the flight plan.

This is the shortest flight in this section being only 131 nm over barren dessert, so to brighten things up we got permission to over fly Las Vegas, this detour takes us to the dizzy heights of 142.8nm and a flight time of around 50 minutes! (At 200kts)

We waited for dusk to start developing, flying this bird in temperatures of around 100F isn’t fun.

Lined up with clearance received we spool up the twin Wasp radials, music to my ears!

Cleaning up, we set a course for the MCY NDB.
ATWCSiX02.jpg~original

I didn’t promise pretty scenery.
ATWCSiX04.jpg~original

But the size of the dessert is awesome.

Jackass Airfield, our first VRP.
ATWCSiX05.jpg~original

Continuing our journey the light starts to fade fast behind us as the sky ahead has an eerie glow.
ATWCSiX07.jpg~original

We pass the NDB and Dessert Rock airfield, a nasty piece of airfield flatten going on there.
ATWCSiX08.jpg~original

Beautiful skies behind us...
ATWCSiX09.jpg~original

The Casablanca livery.
ATWCSiX10.jpg~original

From the pit we see down town Vegas in the distance.
ATWCSiX11.jpg~original

Las Vegas is a huge city and it takes some while flying over the suburbs.
ATWCSiX12.jpg~original

Our turning point is over KVGT – North Las Vegas, we then turn onto 150 on a direct track to Kidwell that will see us pass to the east of the city.
ATWCSiX14.jpg~original

Nellis AFB in the distance, home to more military schools and squadrons than any other USAF base.
ATWCSiX16.jpg~original

Tracking Las Vegas Blvd south bound.
ATWCSiX21.jpg~original

Shiny buildings with mesmerising lights everywhere.
ATWCSiX23.jpg~original

Over McCarran International (KLAS).
ATWCSiX25.jpg~original

Passing over the southern city limits takes us out to the darkness again.
ATWCSiX26.jpg~original

The soft pink glow of the instrument lights and the drone of the radials give me a warm fuzzy feeling!
ATWCSiX27.jpg~original

This is the longest leg of the flight, I opt to follow the high tension powerlines and search out I95 which will also guide us to the city.
ATWCSiX13.jpg~original

Passing 1L3. With a name like Searchlight you would have thought it be more visible,10nm to go.
ATWCSiX15.jpg~original

I can see our destination ahead, such a desolate location.
ATWCSiX17.jpg~original

On final, easing her down gently and bleeding off some speed.
ATWCSiX18.jpg~original

Nearly there..
ATWCSiX19.jpg~original

A nice smooth landing!.
ATWCSiX20.jpg~original

The engines growl as I steer her around the taxiways to the apron.
ATWCSiX22.jpg~original

Cold and very dark, I'm off to the bar to wait for Micke. Time to give the baton a good buffing!

This is not the first time the Casablanca Electra has appeared in the challenge, back in the very first challenge JDA flew the same aircraft in one of our most memorable PIREPs here http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/topic/905-leg-84-gmmn-casablanca-to-dtta-tunis

Thanks for not dropping off just yet!

Nice PIREP Joe.

I admit I do snore and it is worse when I have had a few.  Thanks for not mentioning the farting.

Some beautiful screenshots, I especially liked the one entitled "Beautiful skies behind us". Superb!

By the way, don't polish your batton to much, I have heard it can make you go blind.

Buffing the Baton eh... I'll just leave you to it Boss, give me a shout when you're satisfied  :whis:

I had to resort to the Greyhounds for my transfer from Fallon down to Kidwell as the US Navy and Army felt they had done more than enough getting me that far..  They didn't want to risk an other live ordnance being let lose over US soil (Thanks JG!!!)

Will soon be departing Las Vegas on a bus headed to Laughlin that should pass by the airfield.. fingers crossed I can convince the driver to drop me off despite it not being a scheduled stop...

Love the look of that Electra, might be something worth picking up. And those dusk shots looks amazing!
