Just Flight Tornado GR1 first flight

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I finally got hold of this long awaited aircraft at the show in Cosford. After almost a week of cockpit and systems familiarization, I took the plunge and set off on my first flight in the aircraft model that this package was based on; ZA465 'Foxy Killer'. This was from RAF Marham to RAF Lossiemouth and is the tutorial flight supplied with this superb aircraft.

I hope you enjoy the flight!

Here's a few pics of the Tornado's business area: Left console (and yes these systems are all functional, which is why it took me a week of constant reading to learn!! :))

Thanks guys, the detail is fantastic isn't it? It takes a bit of tweaking to get it to play nice, but it comes with a handy configuration tool to make it a lot easier.

My next flight will be attempting a full wing sweep, high speed, low level spin around the Mach Loop. That should be fun! I'll post pics after the flight

Thanks Brett, believe me when you hit the reheat on takeoff, it's a real kick in the pants!! The rapid acceleration is very well modelled and considering you go from a standing start to 250 kts in around 15 seconds, you have to be on the ball. Things happen very quickly after you hit the throttles and gear/flap damage due to over speeding while extended is also modelled. I've pretty much got the systems down now, however I'm sure there's more to learn now with the included KC135 tanker and in-flight refuel operations.

Nice set of pics. :thum:  Next time you should try it for what it's made : flying at treetop level with terrain following radar !  :)

The "office" reminds me of all the years I spent flying Falcon 4.0.

I have and still fly Falcon 4.0 and you're right, it's just the same! :D I plan on taking her for a spin around the Mach Loop at low level so I'll post pics of the event here!!

Great pics, Adrian. A week of study, you say? You must have been studying hard!     ^_^

It's hugely satisfying to master the intricacies of a complex aircraft, though — well done!    :thum:

Cheers,

Thanks Bruce, I still have to learn the TF radar and inflight refuelling and that's my next job! :) This is probably my favourite aircraft of all time, so I wanted to do it justice by learning it well.

Adrian,

What is the low speed stability of the aircraft like (for example) on landing approaches? That is generally the area of the flight envelope that interests me the most :) I am glad that you are enjoying it. I haven't actually done any flying since the show, because I have a problem with the joystick controller assignments in P3D v3 (all of my planes yaw significantly to the right during the take off roll). It appears that a fair number of P3D v3 customers are suffering from the same problem :(

Hi Chris,

If you have wing sweep set to 25 degrees and manoeuvre flaps or mid main flap deployed, the stability is good down to around 140-150kts depending on load out. This is the approach speed range for normal landing conditions.

I do not have P3D, but how severe is the side yaw on the aircraft you mention? Are they single engine props? I used to fly DHC-1 Chipmunks for real and they had a terrific pull to the side on take off, as do all single engine props to one degree or another, which was countered by setting a given amount of rudder trim prior to take off so this is realistic really. Maybe there is a setting to alter the amount of prop torque in the sim.

Gorgeous plane and very well shown. Love the office shots...typical of JF's newer stuff these days...looks awesome. :thum:

R.A.F.'s F106A has that OMFG acceleration on take off as well...just point the nose straight up and the speed stays reasonable long enough to get the gear up...hehe. Landing at 150+ is also a kick in the pants...looks like the Tornado has flaps at least...cheater. :P

Cheers...Looks like a blast.

Cheers guys, it is great fun. @Dolf, I may look in to the F106 as it sounds like a good one, but this is only the second military add-on I've bought for FSX as I don't usually fly military stuff, however I've loved the Tornado ever since I was a kid, so I had to have it. The other one is the DHC-1 Chipmunk as I used to fly those in RL and it brings back many memories for me. :)
