rob16584 42
Finally it was my turn to continue the tour of Scotland. For some reason i've always enjoyed flying into Kirkwall, so I was looking forward to this flight. I planned on flying it in some old antique of an aircraft, but when the time came I couldn't find my CD with it on (I think someone has been tidying in my room!). In the end I opted to fly in an AN-2, and then fortunately managed to find one on flightsim.com (an2t_07.zip) and it is compatible with FS9 and FSX, comes with a great VC and 2D cockpit along with a wheeled and ski version. Perfect I though, so downloaded, installed and was ready to go inside 15mins..... It was very quiet on the tarmac at Sumburgh, the weather looked fine so I guess everyone was having their dinner My screenshot utility then started to take black pictures, I managed to notice it just after our climbout, so then altered it to take a shot of the whole screen. This one is after reaching my cruise altitude of 8,500feet. I did intend to cruise at 2,500 feet, and thought I was doing so until I was asked to look for an aircraft at my 3 o'clock at 4,500 feet. To my surprise the plane was below and not above me, I then realised the altimeter was in metres and not feet! Igor the co-pilot had a little chuckle to himself after realising my mistake VC and 2D cockpits, both very easy to fly from, but the VC is better on the ground Making our way towards Kirkwall The waters below look very calm, unusual for this time of year 8,500feet took me above the clouds, so we had great visibility and favourable winds Although it looks like the passengers have already abandoned ship! Lots of little airstrips down there if you fancy some touch and goes Better consult the approach chart, don't want to incur the wrath of ATC as there seem to be quite a few aircraft on their way to Kirkwall Turning and descending to 1,500 feet as I (try to) follow the DME arc Come on Igor, keep your mind on the flying He even turns his head to match the control inputs Runway in sight, better slow down. Full flaps stall speed is 51kts, so it's going to be a slow approach Getting ready, flaps coming down The clouds have cleared up a little Almost there, committed to land now With a gentle puff of smoke we touch down Igor takes control and taxis us to the terminal Where we shut down and unload Dai's sheep-dip Over to you Cap'n Hill
