Nice shots Peter!

What else does this pack include?! If its just the cockpit and a re-modeled plane with new paints its seems a bit expensive?

No it is just the aeroplane Sam, with two repaints...The old free panel less cub that came with Alaska remains as is. I have no idea how much 1200 thingys is but I like the aeroplane. I will copy and paste some comments I made elsewhere:-

If you look at the last but one picture...close up of main instruments, you will see the localiser needle is displaced. I had just done a LOC/DME approach to Sitka (there is no glidepath here but will check when I get an airport with full ILS). There are lots of navaids around Alaska. You just have to tick the box on the MAP to make them all show. Then if you hover your mouse pointer over one of them on the MAP, it will play the Ident. Also the nav box on the Cub has a button to click to hear the ident of the NavAid that you have tuned...There are many VORs and NDBs as well. The Icon has no navaids in it so that is map only (just like the Venoms and Hunters that I flew). However, the Carbon Cub, RV6 and Maule have navaids on board.

No, sadly there is no float version of the CC and only two liveries. Yes it does fly extremely well and with dramatic performance. Take-off and landing is very short (especially if like me you accidentally set the parking brake on the approach!). Rate of climb is quick. Ailerons are light and the aircraft will not just fly a course on its own. Loops are great. Rolls are great (the engine cuts near the inverted but roars up again as you come out...not a problem as the rate of roll is faster than the Icon).

One thing about Alaska is that there are hundreds of Seaplane Bases, so I expect to be using the Icon more than the Cub. What I have in mind is flying between airports with the Cub and then while based there for a while, seek out all the local SPBs with the Icon. Then back into the Cub to move base to the next airport smile.gif

EDIT...forgot to mention that I tried a spin in both directions from 14000 feet...The spin is very stable but the speed sits steady at 69 knots. This leads me to believe that on this aeroplane it is a spiral dive as opposed to a proper spin. I will experiment further and see if I can persuade it to remain fully stalled in a "flatter" proper spin. BTW spinning is prohibited anyway.

Interesting comments, sounds a nice little plane, but the price puts me off.

1200 M Points is around £10, I brought the whole region of Alaska for £10, The price for a deluxe plane should be more like £7 as a max, especially if there are no missions or challenges associated with it, then I might consider it.

Sam. :thum:

Well FLIGHT is now history so I guess I'm one of the very few who bought the Carbon Cub...I will continue to enjoy it and the other deluxe aircraft in Alaska and Hawaii but I was so looking forward to future developments :(

Here's their official statement:

Microsoft Studios is always evaluating its portfolio of products to determine what is best for gamers, families and the company, and this decision was the result of the natural ebb and flow of our portfolio management. Many factors were considered in the difficult decision to stop development on "Microsoft Flight" and "Project Columbia," but we feel it will help us better align with our long-term goals and development plans. For "Microsoft Flight," we will continue to support the community that has embraced the title and the game will still be available to download for free at http://www.microsoft.com/games/flight/

Peter,

I am sure there are many great screen shots and movies to come from you yet.

Thanks for posting that link and I forgot to say your shots above are breathtaking, well done.

Peter,

Very sorry that something you obviously like very much is being abandoned by the developer. You've done some great work with it and I'm sure there's more to come. Alaska as a BIG place with a lot of stunning scenery that you can still make the most of.

That's a sad announcement to hear so soon Peter. At least they will still keep it up and running. To bad they didn't add those missions and charm things for Alaska before pulling the plug. Does anyone think they will open it up to 3rd party developers?

I feel sorry for the folks that did enjoy it and that also spent money for addional content thinking that they would be able to continue building a full world and hanger. I would feel cheated if I had gotten involved in it.(yes John, I know they have the right to do what they want for corporate reasons :D ) I do love the way they word their statements, mine would have come out like "Oh Man, we sure screwed this one up, should have listened to the customers and developement team instead of the boneheads in charge"

The only time there's truth in marketing is when it works to their advantage. If it doesn't, it's either left unsaid, spun, or they just tell bald-faced lies about it.

Here is something I wrote elsewhere:-

I guess I'm a member of a pretty exclusive club...The CCC...Carbon Cub Club. I'm the founder member and at the moment I'm flying it from Sitka to Skagway...Over the mountain range behind Sitka then down into the very long fjord that runs all the way to Skagway...I'm flying at about 1000 feet and really enjoying the best scenery I've seen in Flight Simulation...I'm about halfway there now and have a VOR tuned (seven sisters SSR) and it is showing on the OBS. I've just saved the flight and will continue tomorrow. Alaska is very very big and will give me a lot of enjoyment with my Carbon Cub and my Icon amphibian, hopefully for many years to come.

Great pics, she sure does look a mean little beast. Thought you may like to see these, Both are freeware models and well worth finding.

First is the Super Cub, A lot more power and better flight characteristics.

the second is the Brazilian Neiva P56, it's a licence built version of the Cub and used for pilot training.

NievaP56.jpg

Both interesting versions of the Cub and a good alternative to the default aircraft.

  • 1 month later...

Can anyone modify this for use in FSX? I fly Flight-Replicas and A2A Cubs a lot and would love to have the Carbon Cub SS in the fleet. I too, am horribly let down by the lack of talent and effort put forth by Microsoft in the Flight project. FSX with REX, ORBX, Carenado, A2A, Flight-Replicas, PMDG just blows Flight away and it is not worth it to upgrade. I tried Flight once and that was enough to know I will be staying with my hotrodded FSX for quite awhile yet. When small developers show Microsoft what is possible on their old platform and they fail to deliver on the new, that's pretty pathetic...

The real aircraft Microsoft modelled (N155NC) I have seen in person. The door should say experimental on the inside, the wing support struts are polished and it has rubber strips covering the hinge openings of the control surfaces now. Also, dash panel is also flamed as is the upper wing box panels. Floor is all light gray...
