FSX only for me. FS9 looks boring visually now but runs well on most computers. I like FSX even though there are problems running it sometimes due to code restrictions on core use, it has taught me a lot about computers and even in default mode kept me happy for many years. Now with many addons added it has become a really nice place to fly in.

P3D? I will wait until I upgrade my PC and they settle in to solid version. I was a little taken aback when they went from P3D1 to 2 in such a short time leaving some with addons purchased that do not work in the upgraded version. It also looks heavily shaded or something, giving the screen image a dark look. It is also ridiculous to have the red 'Academic Version' on the screen whether you get used to it or not.  I could be wrong here with P3D so don't jump on me to bad. :D

Hey Brett,

Thanks for your feedback, the dark view you refer to with P3Dv2 is the HDR shading, it can be switched off (which I prefer) and it eats frames too.

The reassuring thing about the future is that development is continuing under LM when and if you feel you want to upgrade you will be able to.

Hello Bri,

There's not much talk on our forums about P3Dv2 so we just wanted to get a handle on what the usage split was with other MS flight simulators (MS Flight excepted).

Cheers

It should be interesting to see the results. Its a shame it wasn't a broader poll that included XPlane and an others category. it would be interesting to run it once a year to see use trends.

I am glad you excluded MS Flight, IMHO it is a toy and not a sim

May venture into LM territory after the release of V3 but not before.

not a bad decision !

it was originally my decision as well but curiosity got the better of me.

Do I regret it? no, but currently imho although it has some benefits over the original fsx it is no competition for fsx using dx10, there are just too many problems,  it is an unfinished project and it shows. there a few things that make you go WOW!! followed by many things that make you shhhhhh-t

how does it go?  huge potential , but no cigar

P3D2 is a major improvement over FSX, and although I can understand why people possibly haven't moved over yet, it is the future and is very stable with much better performance memory-wise.  Can the other 4 P3D2 users identify themselves so we can have our own little forum corner? :P Cheers K

Kev, we must have 2 different versions of v2 :)

if i run ftx airports with ftx england |I get blurry textures and after about 30 minutes a ctd.

I was checking it out this AM if i use soton airport with photoscenery i get about 30fps, with ftx england and no photoscenery i am down to 17fps

if i change the lod range to 8.5 it ctd's straight away

getting rid of vert sync does nothing at all likewise reflections gives me about 2fps

it is no bigs because i am really happy with fsx and dx10 which gives me 40fps no matter what scenery i use,

I use P3D but not heavily and haven't tried any add-ons with it yet. To the extent I've used it, I,m pretty happy with it, but can't say that I've pressed it very hard.

I'm pleased we have it and that it's being actively developed and improved. I'm hopeful that the rumored sale of the rights to the FS franchise might open the door for L-M to begin openly marketing to the retail users. It's not clear whether that is what they want, however. They are not a retail marketer of anything, so may see that as being a step away from their core business.

The voting responses start to tell an interesting story with only six out of 28 respondents indicating some use of P3D and none exclusively.  Now stats can be interpreted all sorts of ways, but simply, on this one, some are dabbling in P3D to varying degrees from experimenting to more regular flying and, more than likely, they are the more serious simmers.  The rest seem happy with FSX.  Based on the current results with 20 out of 28 respondents using FSX exclusively, and 22 not using P3D at all, a more significant statistical population would probably show an exponential increase in FSX users.

Certainly explains the serious lack of interest and discussion on the Forum.

Thanks Andrew, that is an interesting take on the results so far.

I expect that FSX users are in the main happy with it at the moment, especially if they have it running smoothly with high detail.

P3Dv2 is more efficient at the same detail but as soon as you start adding shadows and HDR lighting the demands on the CPU and GPU are still higher than most machines can cope with at full resolution.

I recall a similar poll, probably around four years ago. At that time the split was almost exactly 75% FSX and 25% FS9 -I don't recall if there was any mention of X-Plane or not but if so it was miniscule. I'm guessing that most of the FS9 users graduated to FSX and the P3D users are from the ranks of FSX users, testing the water for the NGFS.

I don't think P3D is it - yet, but it is being actively developed by a company that seems committed, competent and has deep enough pockets to pull it off. They have the additional advantage of having a parallel body of potential customers besides flight sim hobbyists to help pay the freight.

I ticked the FSX only box.  Don't get me wrong, I would love to move up to P3D.

So why haven't I? The simple answer is that I have a lot invested in FSX. I have no idea if I can move what I have over to P3D, and if I did it would mean a massive rebuild, which I just don't have time for right now.

Have to say I didn't find it a problem.  The installation of P3D2 itself was a dream and I installed it in parallel to FSX so if I got annoyed with it I could go back to flying without any issues.

What I genuinely found was that installing much of my existing scenery was as simple as just creating an entry in the P3D2 scenery.cfg that referred back to the FSX install locations :)  That worked for all my UK2000 and Horizon photoscenery add-ons.  Aircraft I installed separately, but just my Alabeo PA38, Aerosoft Bronco and Twotter and the Majestic Q400 for now.  All of that took me about 30mins without any issues whatsoever.   The biggest hassle factor was setting up all my key controls again in P3D2 :P  Installing REX textures into P3D2 was simple.  Using OpusFSX just required checking a box :P

There is a thread on Avsim (if you dare go there) that details huge numbers of compatible and non-compatible add-ons with P3D2 as well as workarounds posted by various people if they are needed.  Virtually all my used add-ons with FSX now have specifically released P3D2 versions :)

Up to now though, I have virtually all scenery, my fave aircraft, REX, OpusFSX, and shortly the P3D2 version of FS flying school in P3D2 with no hassles or tweaking whatsoever....and I can go back to FSX for the NGX in a millisecond should I choose to do so.

Now that LM are up to v2.2 (with v2.3 only weeks away?) the biggest technical issues with P3D2 have been eradicated and there should only be performance improvements to come with further point releases, especially with respect to Crossfire/SLI support.

For my money, the only reason to actively choose not to go with P3D2 now is if your hardware can't take advantage of its feature set and you can't or don't want to upgrade it.

Kevin,

What exactly does "creating an entry in the P3D2.cfg file that refers to the FSX install location" actually mean? I know I sound thick, but if it really is as simple as it sounds, then I might consider trying it. Of course, what I really need is for my addon planes to work, and that includes the PMDG 737NGX, QW146, Flight1 CCM, and RealAir Duke/Turbine Duke.
