Well I said I was giving up FS, and it's true, I've just not had time to touch it in the past week...

However, I didn't say I was committed to giving it up forever and a day, or abandoning forums entirely, that's a matter still that could go either way. Going cold turkey like that might be too far, certainly right now :P I will take a break as recommended by several wise contributors here, but I'm not going to rush back straight into the arms of my performance issues and frustrations especially when I'm powerless through penury to purchase the necessary hardware to improve it...

However I am pleased to announce I have made ever so slight progress with GMAX..in that I've managed to create 2 primitives and join them into one. (Thanks for the link to the video tutorial Jess it was difficult to follow with no mouse on screen but I managed to get through - sort of). Still having trouble grasping the basics though, like when I'm supposed to have editable mesh or poly :S.

Cheers K

Know how you feel Kevin.  I switched on my computer today, that has been running great without a problem for the last 7 months, only for it to tell me today that the copy of windows 7 Ultimate that I bought from PC world @ £220 and was validated on installation is not a genuine copy.

Without having to do a full re-installation, it will not allow me to validate on line, so I am sitting here with windows working OK but telling me not genuine.  So I have stopped automatic updates and am carrying on using it and Bollux to Microsoft..

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I couldn't stay away for too long.  Made the tough decision to format everything and reinstall the lot to see if that solves any of my performance woes.  I'd been holding off for a good few months getting more frustrated with it and not really wanting to go down this route (we all know how long complete reinstalls end up being :P ).  So I've backed up as much of my download add-on install files as I can and formatted the C: drive.  The fact I'm here tells you that the OS reinstall went (mostly) ok, seems to be less weighed down by something! Fingers crossed for the P3D and addon installs over the next week....

Odd...just noticed this.

I just upgraded my comp at a local computer store, getting Win7 Ultimate installed over a reformatted previously Win8 drive...and I am getting the same message popping up in the lower corner of my screen.

However my system seems to be allowing updates. ???

Waiting on a call back right now to find out what they actually installed on my machine, because I didn't recieve Install discs nor repair/reboot discs when I got the machine back.

I have re-allowed updates and they are downloading OK.  I only got this problem after downloading MS Essentials and reading on the forums, there appears to be a bug in it and MS are not rectifying it.  So it's still Bollux to MS..  :)

Kevin,

Don't give up on Gmax, It took me years to get into it & I'm still learning ( I did give up on it once, but necessity being the mother of invention, I went back for another agonising learning curve) - have just recently started to get the hang of texture mapping.

Gmax, despite its age is a very powerful design tool & can make multi-LOD models which are great for keeping frame-rates low.

There is an excellent tutorial book out there - "3DS MAX 7 Bible" which is what Gmax was based on - the pdf version has 1313 pages & is 185 MB in size.

Gmax, like so many software design tools is probably best learnt by example with someone who is familiar with it, unfortunately the pro courses are extremely expensive & finding a volunteer on your doorstep probably unlikely.

Kevin, sound like you are giving up on the whole thing for the sake of GMAX.  It sound like you should have a rest from building and chill out with some nice relaxing flying.

I would strongly advise you not to give up, have a rest, well yes, but go cold turkey on FSX and P3D. Man don't do it unless you have a lot of support and a good therapist .  You will live to regret it.

Kevin, I think I know how you feel, J G offers some good advice - I believe you have a PPL, if you can attain that then flying FSX simulation should be a doddle with your knowledge of scenery design.

Such a shame that we live in different cities, my knowledge of your scenery design skills seems to fill a gap in my skills of scenery building & probably vice versa, suspect that pooling our skills would result in some great scenery.

As J G says, I also get frustrated with scenery design & probably am my own devil's advocate, but when fed up with the design side, I chill out by flying my humble pc based flight sim.

If you walk away from FSX - that decision should be respected, but I do feel that you have so much to offer the simming World. At the end of the day simulated flying may not be as much fun as the real version, but hey, it's a hell of a lot cheaper!

Ray.

Ray it is indeed, I walked away for a break, now just time is limited so I cant do everything I would like to :P

No doubt I will come back to Gmax at some point but for now the time isnt there to learn it...

I'm in the process of rebuilding my sim after deciding to format and reinstall everything to try to fix some performance issues, so as I add things back now I'll take some pleasure from a few quick circuits :)
