Solar Eclipse 20th March UK.

Recommended Posts

They were very guarded about things like that back in the 40's John, the truth can hurt  :secret:

Ouch! Actually I cant remember WW2 or the Korean war, Vietnam I do remember as a young boy, watching the news and seeing reports and footage.** A school friend of mine fought in the Falklands, so that dates me :P

** A defining moment in my young life was watching these reports and realizing that the good guys didn't always win. Probably the first illusion of my youth that was shattered. :huh:

I remember a total eclipse as a young boy too! It was quite a big thing with all the neighbors coming out to see it. We had prepped before hand with a hole in cardboard and dire warnings about looking directly at it. After a statement like that, how could you not!!! I ended up with an eclipse imprint in my retina.  :D

And that's why the sun still shines out of your arse. :D

After a superb week of unbridled clear skies and sunshine, it was f........ cloudy for the eclipse. Although inside the house we had to put a light on.

All that local TV coverage for nowt. PAH!

Yeah, still looking for it, got bored, decided to go and make my own...without Brett's anus.

  • 1 x olive;
  • Grenadine;
  • 1 oz Gin;
  • 2 oz Sloe Gin; and
  • 1/2 tsp Lemon Juice.

This is where the exciting bit about an Eclipse starts:

  • Slosh enough of the Grenadine into a cocktail glass to cover the olive;
  • Mix the remaining ingredients with ice and strain onto the Grenadine so they do not mix.
Now, for the really exciting bit - have a sip when witnessing an eclipse, or more to the point in this case, when not witnessing an eclipse.

You now have a dilemma.  If you only drink this when there is an eclipse, look at it on the good side, you won't become an alcoholic any time soon since eclipses only happen occasionally.  On the other hand though, if you use this because you can't see an eclipse, you will probably find yourself witnessing many Eclipses and often.

Enjoy.

I missed this one due to all over cloud. :(

I can remember others that I have seen in the past like the one on the 11th.August 1999 I was in my garden at the time in Kent it went very still and cold it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Then again in West London in October 1959 while at school we were given a piece of smoked glass to look at it   :stars:  no Health and Safety in those days also I think there was one in 1961 but not sure.

Also I can just remember when I was just 8 when I saw my first eclipse  again in West London in June 1954.

The 1959 October 2 eclipse would have been about 30% partial from West London.

There was indeed an eclipse in 1961 (February 15), and it was a very good one. It would have been very early in the morning (so the Sun and Moon would have been close to the horizon), and probably around 92% partial from West London.

The 1954 June 30 eclipse would have been about 78% partial from West London, but it was actually total at the extreme northern edge of Unst in the Shetland Isles.
