  1. @John > "Brave, ain't I?" Well, I'd say sensible and wise (as well as being experienced in such matters, which isn't necessarily the same thing). @Steph Do take control of your Windoze updates, to avoid unwelcome nags In your toolbar and/or system tray. Look especially carefully at the "optional" updates you are presented with... Cheers, bruce a.k.a. Brian747
  2. Watched and enjoyed! Many thanks, Alan! (As my old music master used to say after listening to a particularly dishy soprano — "Ah, if only she could cook!"). Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  3. > "...why change what wasn't broken?" Why indeed? They tell me the stone age was quite a pleasant time to live, apart from the occasional dinosaur. C'mon, guys — let's cut Joe some slack. He's told you he's in the midst of making changes, so why not wait until they're complete and he makes the announcement, so that you can see the final layout before piling in? Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  4. Hi, Lewis! Unfortunately, it's well over a year since I vlew the NGX, so my recollection is a little bit fuzzy. The other problem is that PMDG have modelled a number of audible alarms into their implementation of the aircraft, so more information would be helpful. (Well, it's essential, really). First of all, is it possible for you to describe the alarm, as well as you can. Is it, for example, a warning horn, a verbal message, a "bing bong" sound, or what? Secondly, you say that you're at the gate. But had you just arrived, or are you departing? And are the doors open or closed? (I'm wonder
  5. My apologies, John - quite honestly I had completely forgotten that it's even possible to allow Micro$oft to automatically install anything they like. (Sometimes I think I've been a techie for too long!) Yes indeed, I meant exactly what you said. As a general rule I tend to be willing to consider allowing the ordinary updates, e.g. "security updates" (such a pity they didn't design security into the O/S from the ground up, as proper Operating Systems do) and also to disallow the optional updates, but as I said if needed I always take the option to view Micro$oft's somewhat dubious description
  6. Hi John! Well this one does it by simply hiding any updates of that sort that Windoze presents to me so that I won't be bothered with them again. They usually appear in the "Optional" (a.k.a. 'almost invariably not wanted', IMHO) section, which makes life easier. (I always click the option to check what anything in that dubious category is supposed to do, anyway, which is how I've also avoided any of Windoze X's "helpful" reminders in the task bar). It's that old thing about the price of liberty being eternal vigilance, I guess. Cheers, B.
  7. Great pics, Richard! I've managed to get a 737 safely down on rwy 09, but it wasn't easy — especially given the required approach: There are some great views on the way in, though, as your pics show. Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  8. Hi, Wayne! It seems I'm probably too late to be of any help (I was out, yesterday, and not back 'til late), but FWIW the procedure I use to update my NVidia drivers (in the light of some bad experiences in the past) is this:— * Create a RESTORE POINT first! * Export (specifically named to something different that you can recognise!) your current FSX Inspector settings, too. * Download the latest update (or the one you want), and then NEVER USE EXPRESS INSTALL, always Custom. * Uncheck any un-needed stuff - (in my case) nVidia Audio driver, maybe 3D vision driver and controlle
  9. Hi Sam! Thank you for that. The SDK (for FSX SP2 and Acceleration, in my case) does include: Modeling SDK: A new file, Modeling File Formats, describing the .x and .xanim file format extensions used by Flight Simulator X. Also, sample diffuse, specular and bump texture files are provided for the Boeing 737 and 747, to help demonstrate the issues involved in repainting an aircraft. There is a whole section on Texturing Aircraft Models, and although there's some good advice in there, much of it discusses techniques I have already used. However, I think my main problem is summarised i
  10. <grin> If you take a look at one of their sessions, Brett, I think you'll find that they aren't *entirely* serious! And recently, when asked to what extent they will be utilising PSX's huge array of random malfunction generators, the reply (from an ex-BA Training Captain) was "We have a built-in random malfunction slider due to collective incompetence!" (But you'll be able to judge that for yourself, too). Cheers, B.
  11. @Joe I hope you don't mind my mentioning another site for once, since this is for charity. It's also entirely On Topic for the Hangar (well, for those of us here who vly serious aircraft as opposed to little puddle-jumpers, anyway). If there's any problem, please delete it. This weekend (starting on Friday August 7th and ending on Sunday August 9th) SimfestUK will be doing an "Out of Afica" (and back to Blighty, in the form of London Heathrow) series of 17 flights. This year they are supporting the "Cure Parkinson's Trust" (and will be doing so again when Worldflight comes aroun
  12. Another FSX request, please: I've never found a decent paint kit for the FSX default 747? I've tried, but TBH the results aren't too great. Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  13. Hi, Mike! <grin> Stake your claim right away, would be my advice, and start moving your kit in there as soon as you can. My 'pit very nearly ended up as a "sewing room", and it took me an inordinately long time to reverse that decision.... (With apologies to Alan) — if you can possibly manage it, there really is no substitute for having somewhere with a permanent simming setup. I lost mine for over a year during my father's illness, and having to drag my kit out from under the bed and plug it all together, and then reverse the process at the end of the session, was seriously pai
  14. @Alan > "...a permanently set up flight deck is just impractical." Sorry to hear that, my friend. Admittedly, it took me years to get the Domestic Controller's permission to permanently inhabit the large cupboard known as the 'boxroom', but it was time well spent — and she'd have to use dynamite to get my simming stuff out of there now! The other advantage is that when she starts watching one of those dratted hoop skirts oops sorry "historical drama" things on TV I can quietly creep away.... @James When it came to supporting my three primary monitors I went a
  15. The latest version has been released, and is downloadable from your FlightSimStore account. Release Notes for v2.9 - Support for Dual installs of FSX and FSX:SE with DX10SF installed into both at the same time. - New Preferences Dialog - Fsx.cfg editor screen is now a menu item in DX10 Controller - Various tweaks to Diagnostics - If a Diagnostic Warning is detected then a Warning Icon appears on Diagnostic button - New Option to twinkle distant lights - New Options for Ground Shadows - Bug Fix – The HD Shadows pulldown was not working properly - Bug Fix – The fsx.cfg editor
  16. Great shots! Gotta love the PMDG 777. Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  17. You're not giving us a lot to go on. > "recently, it decided to crash on boot up each time". What is "it", exactly? The whole machine? FSX (at boot up??)? (Or whatever...)? When it "crashes", what exactly happens? Are there any error messages? Anything in the Events log? Please help us to help you. Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747 [sorry, Joe, we must have been typing simultaneously]
  18. Another great trip and great screenshots, Richard! It's good to see another Ailvasoft user, too. But before our Spanish members start leaping up and down may I mention a small point of geographical nomenclature — > "...from Barcelona to La Palma on the island of Mallorca..." Er.... I think you were actually flying to Palma de Mallorca (LEPA) in the Ballearic islands, and not La Palma (GCLA) which is a totally different place. (It's in the Canary islands — also Spanish, but a very different proposition from the landing point of view, with a 7,200 ft runway and only an NDB t
  19. Yup, I reckon that if we were to ever get together over a few pints, they'd have to put us in a distant room somewhere, where we couldn't offend the outraged sensibilities of those who have had less... er, *interesting* career choices. (Did I mention that I was also a child care officer in the red light district of Liverpool?). I reckon that we could swap a tale or two..... Cheers, B.
  20. Hi Joe! With this, YouTube (in Chrome) offered me the option of 1080p, and also 1440p, and 2160p (4K). It's looking great at that resolution, I have to say. IE still can't manage anything better than 720p, but that's IE I guess.... Many thanks for that, Cheers, B.
  21. Further to the above.... SUCCESS! I followed the link in the article I mentioned in the PS above to this VirginMedia page: https://www.youtube.com/html5 where I activated the HTML5 video player. I then tried again — Internet Explorer still shows the limited range of options, but in Chrome I see them all, and 1080p is selectable: Many thanks to Eddie, and to everyone else who contributed to the thread! Another success for the Hangar. Cheers, B.
