  1. @Steph I'm very happy it helped. > "...bit of a war and peace gal..." Delighted to hear it, Steph. There are definitely times when a video just can't cut it — notably when there's something detailed, or even important, to say! @ Dean A pleasure, mate! I'm often surprised to find that most people don't seem to use BOB. Cheers, B.
  2. > "...a reason I didn't include any actual pictures of my landing..." Understood, Micke. Modesty may perhaps be an alien concept to some members of the team, but it's refreshing to find that it's still alive and well with others. Many thanks for a lively and interesting account, and your great pics! Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  3. Well done, Chuck! Congratulations on a smooth flight, the sign of a true professional. As the old RAF saying puts it -- Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss-Poor Performance. (I didn't write that: it had been going for a very long time before I joined). Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  4. Ah, James, if anyone could ever persuade me to try one of those funny little things with fans on the wings it would be you! Great livery! (Great scenery, too). Cheers, B.
  5. Thank you, gentlemen, for enlightening me. <slightly off topic alert> It only occurred to me about six months ago that for the last fifteen years or so I have spent the vast majority of my simming flights in "European" (OK, slightly extended beyond that, but not much and not often) airspace, so this entertaining PIREP was another reminder to me of the fact that I should start flying elsewhere more regularly -- perhaps especially in what was referred to in my young day (I only had one) as "The Far East". (Evidently I hadn't seriously imagined that Orbx "Global" meant what it sa
  6. Great PIREP, namesake! I especially liked the overhead view of the Taj Mahal: was that really only Orbx Global? (Not doubting you at all, just interested to see that they included it: in which case, well done Orbx!). Nice editing work, too! Cheers, B.
  7. One of my favourite airports, and looking seriously toothsome! Cheers, Bruce a.k.a. brian747
  8. <grin> Thanks, but.... You wouldn't want to eat a whole one, right? Cheers, B.
  9. Hi, Steph! Well I'm still using FTX Central v1.0 bld 1043 from June 2014. Anyway, if I click on Tools (top left) and select Reports, there's an option for "FTX Products Installed" that lists all the Orbx stuff I have. (An option that I use quite frequently, given my fuzzy memory...). Whilst we're on this topic, there is a useful (well, I found it useful ) document now available from Orbx called the "FTX Definitive Guide v2". They (Orbx) say: "Volume 1 of a new series of Beginners Guides replaces the old version of the FTX Definitive Guide. It now covers more detail and ha
  10. <grin> It seems that as far as aircraft were concerned you went from the sublime to the ridiculous there, Jess. Slightly expensive on engines, but the baton got through, which is the main thing. Congratulations! :-) Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  11. Wow! Congratulations — that looks very tasty indeed, James! (With <*cough*> the possible exception of the price. ) Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  12. No problems here, either. Sorry I can't help, John. Cheers, B.
  13. An outstanding and extremely interesting review, Andrew, thank you. If anything could tempt me away from my bijou Boeing stable, then the Tristar just might (which, believe me, is high praise indeed, coming from me). All the best, B.
  14. Great review, mate, many thanks! It's definitely the carefully-done details that make these smaller airports so attractive. (Although, since even I would have a bit of a challenge landing my 747 on 4,897 ft of concrete, I fear I won't be adding it to my collection). Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  15. > "i think people 'see' better performance because they have a virgin installation that hasnt had months or years of things being added and removed" I very strongly suspect that's exactly right. Also, as far as I can tell, the only "improvements" that FSX SE might tenuously be able to provide are as a result of compiling the FSX code using the latest version of Visual Studio, which ain't about to do anything magical. (Like Jim, I rather think that they're not allowed to make any changes to the code, anyway). Add to that the fact that FSX SE has stupidly broken lots of third p
  16. I have just come across a sad announcement from Tom Allensworth, who has terminal cancer. See the announcement and subsequent thread here: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/464763-words-i-need-to-share-with-our-community/ I am hopeful that Avsim will live on after him — it's quite a legacy for someone to leave, after all. There are times when there's not much one can say. B.
  17. Further to my post a month ago, "Britjet" has continued to add to his range of fascinating videos letting us simmers into the secret of how the pros do it. Although aimed at PSX users, they would be largely applicable (with some changes to the numbers used) to serious simmers using any large close-to-reality airliner. Here's the current crop (watch out for no. 11, though, it requires a specialist airframe) : 1) Changing runways on ILS approach: http://youtu.be/iANpEdaEsgY 2) The Thrust Lim page: http://youtu.be/xKJbT9J-1Xw 3) The Take Off Ref page: http://youtu.be/Zd0eK2O
  18. Great stuff: thank you, Joe! Excellent pics, too! > "The information contained in this post is not for real world aviation..." Yeah, <sigh> — but wouldn't it be more fun if it was! @Brett "...should have sent him home in the back of a C130" Nah, too luxurious. How about underslung from a Chinook? Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  19. Many thanks, gentlemen — I'm really happy you enjoyed it. @Needles > "I also would have been inclined to let JG sweat it out a bit longer..." It was *extremely* tempting, I must admit! However, the Baton Must Go On! (I guess), and he is needed for leg 20, so.... @Micke No problem whatsoever, my friend — life gets in the way for all of us, from time to time. Well, too b****y often, to be frank! Cheers, bruce a.k.a. brian747
  20. @Joe Thanks for that, my friend. There's never a dull moment in this outfit! > "I will pick up JG as well..." Hmm, you'll probably have to prise him out of Jasmine's iron clutches first. When you get him (she'll probably want a receipt), make sure he's got his new passport with him too — you know what he's like! @John > "I owe you a few beers..." Oh, nothing that a small brewery wouldn't cover.... > "Now I have to stay out of the clink until leg 20..." Now if I were a betting man..... Cheers, Bruce a.k.a. brian747
  21. It's Moscow. And it's cold. And I'm fed up. "Moscow?!", I hear you howl, "That's not in the brief". Ah but.... You see, to explain what follows I have to give you a bit of what novelists call the 'backstory' so that you can understand what's going on. So suffice it to say that it *is* Moscow, and I'm in the cockpit of my freezing cold 747 in a remote corner of Vnukovo airport. Not Domodedovo UUDD, as you might have expected, or even Sheremetyovo UUEE, but Vnukovo UUWW for the simple reason that *that* is the airfield where the Moscow flights for Iran originate from, and I don't want to call
  22. John, that's truly beautiful stuff! A great PIREP. How on earth can I follow that? OK, so all I have to do now is to figure out how to get the baton from you, now that you're back inside again. (Again). oshit (as Terry Pratchett so memorably put it). Er, leave me with it.... Cheers, Bruce a.k.a. brian747
  23. Well done, John: those control conflicts are a real pest when they arise. I'm glad all is well, Cheers, Brian
  24. Hi John! To me it sounds as though Something Else is (also) controlling your throttle. This can happen if (for example) FSX in its infinite wisdom decides to re-map your USB hardware, so that all of a sudden you have something else demanding a throttle cut when you had thought you were moving a different axis altogether, or even using a keystroke. Watch out for the EZCA default mappings, too. Just a thought, but it might be worth checking all your control mappings, including EZCA's and the FSX ones that you *thought* you had disabled long ago.... ;-) Cheers, Bruce a.k.a. t'other Brian
  25. Well done, Kieran, especially taking into account the need for your dealings with various dubious characters (not to mention "Jailbird John"!). Great PIREP — no one messes with the Mutley team, right? Cheers, Bruce a.k.a. brian747
